      Tell me about art

Im really starting to get into it. I would love to take some classes or something but I've been told that it doesn't really help. I wanna start painting or drawing but i'm a terrible artist so I dunno where to start any ideas?

I would say Art is anything that sparks interest in you.

Something I don't like about my art teacher is that she tries to tell us what art "is" and what it "isn't".

As for classes, I guess it all depends on what kind of art you're interested in. I too have troubles decided where to start, as I just want to jump right into something and try to make something amazing. It doesn't turn out that way though...

Practice makes perfect. Even though I'm not really sure what to practice on...

Art classes have helped me progress faster than my usual rate but I don't think it's necessary.

I suppose you could start with some sketches. Copy things, draw things you see around you. Concentrate on the negative and positive shapes. That has helped me alot.

As for painting, be prepared to fork out alot of money for all the stuff you need in the long run. It doesn't come cheap. My art teacher use to say "Treat yourself to a good tube of paint every week" like it was some expensive candy or some shiet. Pissed me off lol. Cause I used the cheapest paint obtainable via stores, couldn't afford any better. And when it comes to painting, better quality with paints and equipment does make a difference. But you don't need to worry about that so much when you're starting out.

Art should really just be an extension of your inspired soul. It should feel natural, not forced.

Starry starry night, paint your pallet blue and gray,
Look out on a summers day,
with eyes that know the darkness of my soul.

To answer your question on where to start: Well, just start. Get a DeviantArt account (or make your own free website), paint or draw a picture, and if you're satisfied with it, post it up. Rinse, repeat, and eventually you'll find yourself in the eye of the Spiraling Vortex of Improvement. What do I mean by that? Well, here's my own train of thought:

-If I post a picture on ze interwebs, people will look at it (which is really the whole point of art - having others look at and interpret it)

-The fact that people will be looking at it will encourage me to make the picture as nice as I possibly can before posting, as opposed to simply putting up a slipshod, slapdash, haphazard and overall mediocre work that looks unfinished at best

-It'll also inspire people to leave critical comments as to how I can improve the picture

-After I follow the advice of my (positive) critics, I'll hopefully end up with a work that I'm proud of

-This will motivate me to continue posting

-Eventually, I will improve enough so that I have a "fanbase" (if you can call it that...)

-Having people there to burden me with their expectations of periodic updates will spur me on to keep posting, ensuring that I don't get lazy

      -I will continue to improve

      -Because of this, more viewers

-Because of this, more expectations for me to work, work, work

      -Because of this, more improvement

      -Endless cycle of improvement

So, yeah. Kind of the opposite of what works for CB, since this does tend to make things a little forced. But then again, I'm the kind of person who needs to give himself a little kick in the rear to get things moving...otherwise, I get lazy.

I wouldn't encourage a beginner to post more trash all over DA. It already suffers enough from that problem. (You know, besides the porn, badly drawn manga/anime, shitty photography, and furfags that infest the place)
