Tell me about Qi Gong and Tai Chi

I understand that both are based on the premise of the idea of Chi. But what are the other under lying concepts. Like what are they trying to accomplish? Are they just trying to build energy and/or clear their mind? What are the reasons for the different postures? How can the position of the body effect flow of Chi? Is Chi just a visualization of sensation?

I've been doing a little bit of Tai Chi, but I only attended a few classes because of my scedule. People study Tai Chi for many different reasons, I tried it for the meditation aspect of it, clearing my mind and gaining energy, and it seemed to work well. I also did it to try something new and martial arts related. We were told that the movements are combat moves, just in slow motion. We jokingly called it "Slow Motion Kung Fu", which is not far from the truth. We also did some hand pushing exersises, which improves balance, and with this we learned some basic martial arts principles, how to use a push against you to your advantage, and get out of the way.

I'm no means an expert, but I'm experienced in martial arts, and I have a great interest in Tai Chi myself. I think Qi Gong is more of a meditation version, I've never tried it.

Cool thanks, I have a couple more questions if you dont mind. I feel like I understand how to move the energy, is there anything to focus on to become more effective at it? Or do you learn to get better at it just my doing it more often? Any chance you could explain how you gain energy?

Your breathing is essential. There are many breathing techniques that helps gain energy, and to calm you down when you are stressed. If you are serious about trying out Tai Chi, you should try out some classes. Ask if you can have a free trial lesson. The instructor will teach you all about the right techniques, and how to make them as effective as possible. My instructor has been practicing Tai Chi for 12 years, and I've been told that he sometimes fall asleep while standing, even in class during meditation.

Tai-Chi is an internal martial art. As such it focuses more on developing control over the flow of energy within oneself as opposed to the more physical training of other martial arts, which is why it is practised in such a slow manner. The "idea" of Tai-Chi, as I understand it, is to promote health, provide self-defense and cultivate spirituallity. Apparently it encompasses the ideology of Taoism (ying-yang, softness to overcome strength, etc.)

As far as I'm aware Qi Gong is basically a bunch of breathing exercises that helps with energy flow and relaxing the mind.
