      Tell Me About Becoming a Computer Geek

      You know. Where do I start? Maybe some hacking, (not cracking,) where to start in tackling codes more advanced than frikkin game maker scripts. How do I become a CPU geek?

      I would suggest not hacking into government files as it is illegal.

      Haha, this thread...

      Learn, watch, study, as with all things, focus.
      learn some programming language, hopefully multiple.
      Actively learn about computers, internal and external, pay attention and ask questions.

      You aren't very specific with your question, so I'm not sure how to answer it...

      Be prepared to feel like most of the crap you learn is useless. That is the first step. It'll take a while before it becomes worth while.

      Try to look past stereotypes of "hacking" and just try and learn about how computers work, and things like that.

      What, specifically, are you ACTUALLY trying to accomplish?

      Thanks for making me spray my root beer float over my computer screen sandform.

      But really, I just think it would be cool to be one of those 'computer guys' so that I could always fix my own or my friends computers and be able to manipulate files/write code whenever it would beefit me.

      Son't refer to computers as CPUs.
      Learn C++
      Learn some other coding languages.
      Become fluent.

      You need to get the Amulet of Yendor and sacrifice it to your deity on the astral plane
      Only then will you ascend to the dizzying heights of computer geekery

      The art of being a computer geek is not something you learn, you're born with it! If you really were one, you would never ask questions of how to become one!

      So when pursuing a skill, you should not ask questions from people who know more about the skill? I call bull hockey!!!

      Start thinking in roots of 2. 128 is a round number, not 100.

      Hacking is for losers, learn how to write real code. Hackers are assholes.

      C++ is the best language to learn. But it's hard to learn, it's a huge language. It uses the C idea that a language should do exactly what you tell it to do, even if you tell it something wrong.

      Code:
      Class1 * a = new Class1();
      Class2 * b = new Class2();
      b = (Class1*)a;
      Unlike Java, this would be correct code, but using it will crash your program.

      If you're using a PC, wear a business suit and be a tight ass. If you're using linux, wear big glasses and watch star trek, if your on Mac drink lattes and read poetry. If you're using Solaris, carry around a wifi finder and wear a plaid shirt.

      By that standard, I should be wearing a business suit, big glasses, and be a tightass about Star Trek terminology.

      That's interesting about the squared numbers...

      Hacking is for losers, learn how to write real code. Hackers are assholes.
      Let me clarify. By hacking I didn't mean the thing most people said by hacking. I would have nothing to do with breakign peoples safety measures and distributing it onlne or hacking into someone elses files. I just meant the ability to alter an already written code so that it better suits me. Which would mean being able to break code, which could be fun when done to harm anybody, right?

      If you're using a PC, wear a business suit and be a tight ass. If you're using linux, wear big glasses and watch star trek, if your on Mac drink lattes and read poetry. If you're using Solaris, carry around a wifi finder and wear a plaid shirt.
      Hehe. So do I have to buy a Linux, now?

      Hehe, MOS.

      That made me laugh

      Familiarize yourself with Linux. If you can't list ten things off the top of your head as to why Linux is in all ways superior, you're doing something wrong.
