You should try doing reality checks during the day and asking "Am I dreaming?" during the day. Eventually you will get used to it and start doing it in dreams.
You can also try King Yoshi's All Day Awareness technique. It is known for it's incredible sucess. It is located here

I understand where you are coming from. Like yourself I have a life outside of Lucid Dreaming and it isn't always on the forefront of my mind. This also leads me to forget to do things such as reality checking.

I suggest you could look into some of the WILD techniques. All of them work during the night and generally does not require you to do anything during the day. The one that I use the most and highly recommend is DEILD

I sometimes have this issue. It happens when I have woken up too late and no longer feel tired enough to slip back into a dream. Perhaps you could set your alarm a few hours before you normally wake and then try to WILD. Put your alarm within arms reach from your bed so that you don't have to move much to switch it off.

Well every technique that I have tried doesn't really get me control of when to have lucid dreams, it mostly depends on luck.
And if you don't want to focus on reality checks, dreamjournals and so on then WBT/WILD is the best technique.
That's what I find works best.

And a tip that helped me WILD so much easier:

Try to actually fall asleep! If you fall asleep unconsciously during the attempt then you are close!
And WILD in the sleeping posture you lay in when you go to sleep at the beggining of the night.

AND if you remember a dream upon awakening on your WBTB, then you are in REM.
