Well, giving up entirely would be foolish, but getting the basics down first wouldn't be.
First things first, if you want to get into the simplest parts of LDing, a good place to start is a Dream Journal. Get one, and write in it every morning, maybe even at night if you happen to wake up after a dream. Whatever you need to do to remember the dreams.
Next, Reality Checks are vital. They're basic, and necessary for many techniques. Try checking every two hours, maybe every three, for at least a week, and see how well it works. You may have to adjust it more or less, some people have a hard time with remembering to check, and some find it downright annoying. If memory's your problem, you could think about buying a watch with an alarm built in. This is a bit annoying at times, though, so it's not for everybody. Just make sure you try several RC's a day for a week or two, and see how it works for you. Even if you don't see immediate success, keep at it and things will work out.
Now, this is looking forward a bit: Glance back through your Dream Journal and all of the dreams that you remember through your entire life, and try to spot recurring themes or events in them. These are called Dream Signs, and they're basically advanced Reality Checks. Everytime you see a Dream Sign, even if you're sure you're awake, check to see if you're dreaming. The results can be surprising at times. You may need a few examples to fully understand what a dreamsign is, to start with: Many people use animals, video games, certain locations (schools, libraries, malls, etc) and other physical manifestations, while others use themes such as unusual darkness or brightness. Or it could be the sensations of the dream, such as a feeling of weightlessness, or a lack or excess of pain. Whatever works for you! Noticing and utilizing these Dream Signs is a little more complicated than the last two methods, though. After you've LD'd a few times you'll begin to see more and more trends in your dreams to take advantage of.
After you've mastered these three things, you'll be ready to move on to more complex techniques, such as MILD and WILD. At this point, you might want to check out the Tutorials Forum on the site for more info. There are many techniques I didn't get the chance to mention, or forgot completely about , so check out many of the pages on that board. They're all helpful, and there's TONS of 'em.
Well, hope it helped!
