Abrupt dream end with a scare

I just remembered a dream I had when I was younger. I don't remember much of the details, but I know I saw my mother sitting in her room with her back towards me. When I called her, she didn't respond, which I thought very strange. I pinched myself to see if this was a dream, and I didn't feel anything. I thought, 'This must be a dream'. As soon as I thought that, the dream collapsed in a cacophony of sounds (sounded like bells) and the image turned black with a few gray spots, and I then I was sitting in my bed sweating, as the sounds came totally without warning and scared me to death. Why would this happen as a response to attaining lucidity? And has anyone had a similar experience?

(On a more pleasant note, this brings the total number of accidental lucid dreams that I can remember to 4! Yay me!)

there have been people who have heard sounds while entering dreams, but i've never heard of accounts where they heard it while leaving. I have no idea why you heard something so deafening while leaving your dreams, but there's also a good chance that it was one of those once in a life time dreams. See if it keeps happening

BTW, for most in the beginning, maintaing a dream can be difficult and the slightest lucidity can awaken one. As you gain more experience, you'll see it is easier to stay within the dream

It is strange, though. At the time, I wasn't trying to get a lucid dream, so I don't think there was any excitement at all to wake up from. It was more matter-of-factly. Also, the cacophony and the rapid degrading of the image were in direct response to the realization that this was a dream. There was no fading or feeling that the dream was ending, just those sudden loud sounds and the lost image. I think it lasted a second before I woke up, but the details are blurry. Also, the entire atmosphere of the dream was eerie, like it should have been a nightmare. It's almost like my subconscious was like "Well, you ruined that for me. Oh well, here's the scare anyway.".

Another thought just crossed my mind. Though I don't think that was the case, maybe I didn't become lucid at all. Maybe what I experienced was just the nightmare, nothing more nothing less, and my pinching myself and the realization were just part of the script. If this was the case, it was a pretty unconventional nightmare, though.
