Probably too late now.. But still.
Ignore thinking of what would work or improve your chance in the short-term, in my experience it creates frustration.
Lucid dreaming is a practise you learn just like anything else, like a guitar for example.
You can't find a guide that will make you a master guitarist in a week or even a month. And even if the guide and method is the best in the world it just isn't practically possible if you don't have a deeper understanding of what you are doing.
A better approach is the long-term perspective, where you start with some basics and then move on to the intermediate and lastly the advanced methods.
And when you have done this for a year or two, return to the basics and continue your journey with new experiences and deeper understanding.
I probably nuked the answer to your question. But it might be helpful to a beginner reading it later on.
