      That is barely legible

In a sense yes, you are already lucid you just do not know it. Thus by using a reality check you assure yourself you are in a dream and not just awake.

The first time I had a LD I just simply knew that I was dreaming. This was a long time ago and I had never heard of lucid dreaming I just knew that what had happened was very different than a regular dream. One way to help yourself realize your lucidity is to practice awareness during you waking hours. The questioning of whether or not this is a dream, etc. Give it a try and don't try to "over think" the situation. Just let it happen.
