      excess noise

i live in a one room dorm, so the noise level can get pretty bad at times and makes it hard to WILD. i've tried ear plugs and they worked pretty good and i wouldn't really mind going back to them, but i was wondering what other people do to reduce outside noise if they're in a similar situation. also, i was wondering if i should even do this at all. what if i learned how to WILD where ever, regardless of noise, could that be possible?

I use earplugs also, and find they work very well. Haven't really tried anything else. I believe some other members have said that they've used white noise generators.

I have a simelar problem. My housemates are forever waking me up at 4 or 6am, clattering around.

Problem is, if they continue to clatter around, I can't even try to WBTB.

Around here, they're available at pretty much any grocery store or drug store. They're little foam plugs that you squish up and put in your ear canal. They cost about 2 or 3 dollars for a package of 10 pairs. One pair will usually last about a week or so.

A white noise generator is a program that produces a noise that has static at all frequencies. Kinda sounds just like a soft static that you get on the radio etc. The purpose of this is to drown out other sounds - if you turn it up, it masks other sounds such as you might get from normal disturbances like people moving about etc etc. Because it's a static at all frequencies (or something like that) it can mask all sounds, and your ears will eventually get accustomed to it and you won't notice it.

I think you can buy actual generators that are kinda like bedside clocks and can play different sounds (white noise, ocean sounds etc). Brainwave Generator, www.bwgen.com has a feature that allows you to make a static white-noise sound, and I've found that useful when I've been writing etc. Another, much simpler way to drown out sound is to get a little desktop fan and turn it on in your room. Angle it so it's not disturbing you by blowing on you, and the soft constant sound of it can help to drown out a few of those minor sounds that can niggle you when you're trying to WILD.
