Hmm, caffine might work, or it might just disrupt your sleep and make you cranky the next morning
One thing though, if you are having restless sleep due to stimulants and do manage a lucid dream, it will probably be of short duration and a little messed up.
I've found that the most vivid and longest lucid dreams occur when I am sound asleep.
Caffeine occurs naturally in all chocolate, albeit in less concentrated amounts than, say, coffee. I'm pretty sure that the reason chocolate helps some people LD is because they are ingesting a small amount of caffeine before they sleep, not enough to keep them from sleeping, but enough so that their mind will be more alert than usual during sleep. It definitely isn't the sugar that's doing it, because after about 1 hour all the energy you got from the sugar will be completely gone. Caffeine, on the other hand, has a half-life of around 6 hours once it enters the bloodstream (around 15 minutes after ingestion, depending on the contents of your stomach), so it will literally keep you "up all night."
To the thread starter:
If you're going to take caffeine pills to assist you in LDing, I recommend taking a small amount, like 50mg. An average cup of coffee has 90-160mg of caffeine (it varies considerably, even from cup to cup). Most caffeine pills are 100mg, so just cut one in half. Also, the best time to take it would be after a few hours of sleeping- the "wake back to bed" method- although just before bed wouldn't be too bad either.
