As far as I know, during the REM period the mind displays as much activity as it does while awake. It's during the long periods between REM that your mind is in a deep state of unconsciousness and your body is repairing and resting itself. So, if you time your WBTB so that you wake during or just after a REM period and then go back to sleep straight into a dream, you aren't losing any of the essential benefits of deep sleep. If you stay awake for one hour and sleep for an extra hour, then as far as your body is concerned you're still getting the same amount of deep sleep.
However, I think you need to be sure that you're waking yourself up at the right time, i.e. during or after a REM cycle. If you wake up after five hours and feel extremely groggy and can hardly open your eyes, you might want to adjust the time that you set your alarm for. If you wake up with the feeling that you've just come out of a dream and you can vividly remember details, then you've probably got the timing just right.
