I made a small peice of paper that I carry around with me at all times in my pocket that says "are you dreaming?" I look at it like once every hour and turn my head away a few times and look back to see if the letters have changed etc. I hope after doing this for a few days or weeks I will start to check this peice of paper in my dreams too from my habit of doing it in real life. What do you guys think?

I assume that would work in the same way as performing constant reality checks. I personally don't like critical state testing because I don't want lucid dreaming to interfere with my waking life (but then again, I'm on this forum ); however, it's much easier to do than MILD or WILD. I'm guessing it will take quite a bit of time before checking the paper becomes habit for you, but then it should enter into your dreams. Just note that constant reality checks might work better than the piece of paper because you might answer "no" when you're dreaming. Good luck!

Sure, it'll work as any other personnalized RC.
I remember last summer i wrote a topic about Hunger induced LDs (Oh, how really fucked up the idea seems now), where basically i trained myself to do RC everytime i ate.
The point is, the number of potential RCs is infinite. With more training, you'll find the RC that suits you best and will never let you down!

No, not at all. Just for me, I don't like having to alter my waking behavior in order to help with lucid dreaming. There is no potential health risk AFAIK; I just am not comfortable psychologically with the idea.

There are many very simple, non invasive RCs you could make. Here are some classic examples:
      • Take a two glance at your watch, and see if times changes.
      • Verify if you're able to count backward, or do some basic math
      • Simply ask yourself (and really mean it): "Am i dreaming?", etc.
These will not alter your behavior in any way, there are simple & quick automatisms just like brushing your teeth. Basically, the main goal of a RC is to train yourself to question your reality on a regular basis, and not simply take things for granted. Don't be afraid to be critical of your familiar environment. This will ultimately make you question your dream world.

Why is that really fucked up? I don't think it's fucked up, I think it is a fine idea. And what RC did you find that never lets you down?! Please tell!

dreamer2006, there is nothing wrong with performing reality checks throughout the day. I would recommend glancing at your hand to make sure you have five fingers (try to imagine that there are more or less before you look), or your watch twice as Unicorn said. However, if eyes are not on you, you might want to try breathing through your nose with your nose pinched shut. It's very quick and effective. Your paper idea probably will work too. Although I prefer other techniques for inducing LDs (e.g. MILD, WILD, WBTB, etc.), I still need to practice a lot; I have yet to have a successful WILD. Critical state testing takes a lot less practice (but just as much dedication), and I encourage it for you as long as you don't mind conditioning yourself. Take care.

Why is hunger RC really fucked up? i suggest you try it and give me a feedback

One RC that always works for me is based on a simple 10-15 second observation. I focus my eyes on something, anything, i close them for a few seconds, try to remember, then open them and verify if what i just saw is altered in any way (usually by different color and/or form, or simply disappear).

Yes that technique will work! I actually have this purplish laminated card that I got from the Lucidity Institute some years ago that says: Is this a dream?

I have had this work before, and better than the Nova dreamer device that I had.

I have just recently gotten very active in LD once again after having many spontaneous LD.

I use the card multple times a day.

Also the buisness cards of dreamview I believe say the same thing that you wrote and would be great also!

      Good luck!
In the process of realizing the dream, abandon all feeling of fear; And, if the dream be of fire, transform the fire into water, the antidote of fire. And if the dream be of minute objects, transform them into large objects; Or if the dream be of large objects, transform them into small objects: Thereby one comprehendeth the nature of dimensions.
And if the dream be of a single thing, transform it into many things; Or if the dream be of many things, transform them into a single thing. - Tibet

Well I guess I see your point, re: hunger (hard to do that every night). Thanks for the focusing tip; I'm going to try this.

I actually still carry around a little hot-pink post-it note (actually I have a few, some that have been thru the washer) that says "Are You Dreaming?", that I laminated with scotch-tape. I have it in my pocket almost every day and see it multiple times. I have yet to see that stupid piece of paper in a dream.

RC made easy

Love slips through my grasp once again

Its funny how wrong you can be about a person.
you think they love you, and it turns out to be a lie.
you think you know them, and they turn out to be the exact opposite

A dream, a nightmare, no! A vision, a vision.. of invasion

Remember remember the fifth of November
      Gunpowder, treason and plot.
I see no reason why gunpowder, treason
      Should ever be forgot...

One of the more unusual reality checks.
