I don't claim to have any experience with WILDing (it's just not my thing), but from what I've heard, it's extremely difficult to WILD without having 5-6 hours of sleep first. I'm sure WILDing without sleep first is possible, but it'll be harder to achieve.

it can work, if you can stay awake long enough.

In the last period i was trying this myself, but i did not really see any results of it.
The negative side of this is that, it will take hour and a half until you get in the first REM thus making this way to WILD harder.
On the other side if you do it after 5-7 hours of sleep,it will take you in REM quicker.

I've never tried WILD during the night, only before sleeping, and I always get really far, falling, rolling, vibrating sensations, intense HI, but never any scenes or never any dreams forming, I'm guessing I'm asleep, but aware I'm awake, and it just takes me a long time to get into REM for a dream to form.
So if I ever try one after 5 hours of sleep, the REM should come quicker and the WILD should be sucessful.
So WILD before bed is possible, if you can stay awake and still long enough for it to be sucessful.

Hm... I frequently try before sleep, and on a recent occasion was able to get very close in about 30 minutes. Unfortunately, I don't know how far I would have gotten due to an unexpected wake-up courtesy of a relative.
