Many times when I am dreaming I recognize things that are amiss, yet when I think about them my dreaming mind presents an explanation that prevents me from becoming aware and lucid. For example, in a recent dream I had fallen into a rapidly flowing river and was completly submerged, yet I was breathing normally; when I realized this I thought something was amiss when a voice in my mind said that I was breathing air from inflated clothing, I accepted this and did not become lucid. Any thoughts on why this is occuring and how to stop it?

What you should do is everytime you see a sign like that, do a reality check. Like grab your nose and try to breathe through it. If you can do that, you are definitely dreaming, no denial. Things like this have happened to me, and the trick for that is to do good quality reality checks (If you are new to this, there is a guide in my siggy), as they will be almost failsafe in determining if you're in a dream (they still occasionally fail, but when they succeed, you know you're dreaming, no matter what your subconcious says.

That's perfectly normal. You just have to get used to doing a lot of reality checks, that will make you start questioning weird things in dreams (sometimes..). But you when you do realith checks, do them properly; don't let them become a habit, something you do just for the sake of it. Really question if you are dreaming or not. Look around you, try to remember what you've done in the last hours and after you're positive you're awake think about it, telling yourself that this is reality.
