      QUESTION ON WILD

What are the probabilities of succeeding in a Wild without any prior sleep? Like just before I go to be for the first time that night. Because I think I’ve gotten further that way then waking up drinking mountain dew, waiting, and then sleeping. I tried last night and the mountain dew had me all jittery I couldn’t hold still or get comfortable so I couldn’t concentrate.

Off the topic have any of you seen the movies – Donnie Darko (Drew Barrymore) or What Dreams May Come (Robin Williams, Cuba Gooding Jr.) if so what did you think of them.

WILD is possible on the first time you go to bed. However I wouldnt recommend it for the following reasons:
*It's insanely hard, so you will most likely fail
*To try WILD, you have to stay awake, so you will not fall asleep for longer period of time.
*If you fail, you may get very frustrated and screw up whole night.
*even if you enter WILD, you will not be able to maintain it long enough, as your REM periods are very short in the beginning of a night.

Alright I tried to wild last night. I woke up after 4 hours of sleep and ate something and drank a mountin dew i went back to my room and settled down. When my body went numb i felt like i was suffocating and all my breathing wasn't helping. I tired to stick with it but it was almost painfull after 45 min i shook my self out of it and rolled over and went to sleep.

My question is has anyone else felt any major discomfort while trying to wild?

Discomfort is really a problem, almost everytime I'm getting into it I either have an itch or my position is diverting my attention. I think you have to be in a really relaxed state to WILD successfully, try some relaxation techniques.

Shadow who WILD's quite often says that discomfort is just a part of entering the WILD state. Its just a matter of how to deal with it. I believe breathing techniques should relax you more and focuse more on maintaining the WILD rather than your level of comfort. If you take your mind off your discomfort then chances are you will not experience the discomfort after a period of time. I think that discomfort may be a result of sleep paralysis also. Im not sure. I've only had one WILD my entire life.

As a WILDer myself, I think your best bet is to sleep the night out... get at least 6 hours, then get up... relieve yourself... have a drink or something and just walk around for about 10 mins. Then go back to bed. You will be in the ideal position to have a WILD. Lay on your back for best results.

Now this is how it happens for me: My body becomes paralysed, (this happens to just about everyone everytime they go to sleep. Its a chemical released by the brain to paralyse the body in order to stop you from acting out your dreams.) However in the case of WILDing, you are awake when this chemical takes hold. You will likely experience numbness, a vibrating sensation and a loud noise like rushing water or humming, (it varies from person to person). This sensation can be quite distressing for people who dont know what it is, but its what we commonly refer to as "Sleep Paralysis" and perfectly harmless. Be warned tho... because you are entering a dream state, your mind is at its most active, so you may experience halloucinations. Ignore them and close your eyes, concentrate on the humming and imagine yourself in a dream location.

Sometimes it takes a while to get anywhere, but its usually pretty easy... have some persistance. Eventually, you will simply... slip into a dream. I generally feel the sensation of leaving my body... if you feel this, just go with it.

Note: at this point, you may experience a false awakening. Do some realitiy tests just to make sure.

If you find yourself not able to fall asleep doing a WILD after you slept for a few hours, some times it helps to do it right when you first go to sleep. Ev made a good point though, normally when I try a WILD if I go for a long amount of time and fail I can't fall back to sleep. If that happens when you first go to sleep though might have a problem. What I do some times though is just lay there for 20 minutes, if it doesn't look like I am going any where can just roll over and go to sleep.

Its pretty easy to get in a good position, its always a pain to get an itch though. It happens like every time too.

You may also get them unexpectadly...

I was once very tired (2 days and like 4 hours sleep), and I went to the bathroom. This is no joke: I started getting very relaxing and then, all of a sudden, I saw these flashing lights and my legs and arms went numb. Then I suddenly got excited/nervous/aware and I woke back up.

The moral? Wait. No there is no moral.

Sleep patterns also deal with WILD Succesfullness, which I have seen by almost Wild-ing many times before.

(BTW I have seen the movie Donnie Darko, and I must say it was pretty good. Somethings felt a little overdone, but still a good movie.)

I do not understand why you incorporate mountain dew or any type of stimulant when you wake up. That is where your difficulties are arising on going back to sleep. When you wake up get out of bed and make sure you are awake long enough for your concious mind to be totally active and then go back to sleep to try the (WILD) thing.

Good grief. Remember that song Wild thing by Tone Loc? (SP?)

I don't think hes trying. You wake up and you go to get a drink, just happens to be whatever you like to drink, which for him his mountain dew.

He said Mountain Dew had him all jittery. If that is the case he should consider drinking somthing without caffiene.

Believe me alric I am trying in fact I tired pretty hard last night. I tried sprite (no caffeine) When I’m up getting my drink I try to stay up longer, but can’t see myself watching television so I kind of pace back and forth for a couple min. Then I walk back to my room and concentrate on staying awake. Sometimes I get numb, but most of the time I either end up rolling on my side or just falling asleep .

What exactly is going through your head when you are trying?

vertical horizon - Do you have the opprotunity to get up in the morning for a few hours and then take a nap? If so, it generaly seems to be a more responsive approach to what you are trying as opposed to trying in the middle of the night.

I may be out of line here but I feel that all the approaches to this method can be simplified. As long as you are awake and awake enough to have your concious mind in full go, you can than go back to sleep while thinking to yourself that you are going to recognize that you are dreaming and repeat that phrase over and over and concentrate on trying to make your request valid instead of just repeating words. Just like a reality check. It has to have substanance to be valid.

Its not always necessary to to do a full WILD. Often if you concentrate on something (eg. scenario/scene) as you fall asleep, that scene comes about in your next REM cycle.
Doesn't work for all, but just a thought.
Its a similar idea to VILD, but if you cant do VILDs, just get hooked on a computer game and make it your dreamsign.

Eg. Haven't you ever played a computer game until it came out your ears, and tried to go to sleep.
As you fall asleep you're mind is running over the game and its possiblities.
The next state of relative consciousness is in your dream. And guess what, often its related to the game.

So if you set up a concentrated subject in your mind as you fall asleep, and make it your dreamsign... bobs your uncle.
Or just play a computer game until you cant keep your eyes open any more. And make it your dreamsign

      Just my ideas

Im new to all this, but that made sense. I've played a comp game for hours on end. In one of my dreams that night I ended up being in the game, or thinking everything over. x

Well on the weekdays i dont have any time but Saturday and Sunday I do so I will try tomorrow. About the video game thing, I think I have done that like you play a game constantly and then as your going to sleep you think of what you’ll do in the game later. Sometimes you can even hear the game right?

I’m just trying to get that first really vivid ld, but its pretty tough. What do you guys think about the rc technique. I think I might set a watch to go off every half an hour and then ask my self if I am dreaming… have you heard of that one?

Well I'm brand new to the whole LDing thing, I had my first LD yesterday, a wild, like 10secs, and then today I tried again and holy jesus it was crazy. I'll describe the feelings I went through since I just had them fresh in my mind. Yesterday I noticed before I went into my dream that I experienced some HP imagery but what was even more apparent to me was the sounds I was hearing, yesterday a toy laser gun and then a tv on loud, and today a couple random noises and then a cell phone type ring over and over, then I started to feel the numbness and paralysis while I heard a very loud humming, just like when a jet airplane is about to take off, and it builds up louder and louder and it starts to accelerate, thats what I heard right before I entered my 2nd wild, and it was insane, for me at least. first since i just heard the airplane noise i saw a picture of an airplane but it was like a drawn picture of own, and it started moving kinda like a flip book and dissapeared and then it was really dark and I was floating in some room, but I cant even describe this, i kinda started to spin but it was more the surroundings spinning around me, then i remembered to look at my hands and they were like liquid mettaly kinda with bars and black and white spots, i stared at them for a while and then was kinda walking in this room and gravity was fucked up, so I said something like "fix gravity!!" and it became a lot better, and then i was floating around a school, everything very hazy and dark, and i saw lots of kids, then i was floating but i was kinda like a projector, and was projecting the image of me sitting at a desk in grade school and it was kinda scary to me then was standing again and said like Increase lucidity and clarity, and it became brighter and clearer but it made me lose it all and wake up.... sorry that was soo long.....but i'm still sooo excited...
      "You will cease to exist!!"

*GASP* "But existing is all I practically do!!!"
