If you consider repeating suggestions while falling asleep "self hypnosis", then yes, I have found it effective.
I on occasion do the following when I attempt to WILD:
Count 1 then slowly breathe in while thinking: "I am dreaming" .. Slowly breath out while thinking: "This is all a dream",
Count 2 then slowly breathe in while thinking: "I am dreaming".. Breath out while thinking: "This is all a dream.", etc.
or
Count 1 then slowly breathe in while thinking: "Am I dreaming?".. Slowly breath out while thinking: "Am I dreaming now?". etc.
You could also do the suggestions without counting your breaths (whatever is most comfortable for you).
