      Help with WILD and SP

So I've had a bunch of DILDs by this point but I want to learn how to WILD. I've tried it a few times in the afternoon but have always ended up falling asleep. I've started doing every night before bed and have had almost no success. I usually use the Clarity tutorial for WILDs and I've gotten relatively close I think. I usually get to the point where my body is numb and tingly (NOT paralyzed). And just for the record, I've never had HI and I doubt that I'm even able to because I don' know if I've ever been close. This is where I need help.

      First question:
When you are in sleep paralysis, are you actually paralyzed? That sounds dumb but I've felt heavy and tingly but not really paralyzed. I've tested to see if I was actually paralyzed and I could move my finger or foot or whatever. So basically, how do you know when you are in sleep paralysis?

Ok so what generally happens is that I get numb and tingly and I start to feel the "shift" that Clarity talks about, that feeling that you are falling. Just last night I felt that once and decided to see what happened next. I didn't try to roll over or anything. Then it just went away and I just felt tingly again. I waited, did more reverse blinking and then had it again. This time I actually tried to sit up and I sat up for real and was very dissappointed. So next question:

After a long time I see swirls faint purple lightish things. Are these hypnogogic images?

      Next question:

What do you do when you feel the falling sensation? Should I try to do something active? Or should I wait and something will happen?

      And last:

If I cannot (or at least have not) had HI, how can I have a WILD if I'm not able to use that as the transition into the lucid dream?

Also just for the record, I've tried to do WILD after waking up after like 3-4 hours but have had just as bad luck as I tend to just fall asleep right away. Thanks I know its very long but I'd really appreciate some help as I am very frustrated! Thanks guys for putting up with a newbie!

I'll take a shot at your questions.

#1 Yes, your body is paralyzed for the most part and it can be very freaky the first few times you experience it. SP doesn't always happen when you're WILDing though. In fact, the only times I've actually experienced SP was when I was waking up from a dream, not entering one. It varies from person to person though.

#2 Yes, probably the beginnings of HI. It starts out as fast-moving colorful geometric patterns then turns into faces then turns into whole scenes. You have to just watch and stay awake and yes, it can take a while. Don't move your body. Watching HI is best method of WILDing for me (there are others though, read LaBerge's book if you haven't.)

#3 Not sure about the falling sensation. I've never really experienced that. But I'd guess if you get it, you just need to stay awake and be still. WILDing is all about staying awake while being completely still, sometimes for quite a while. Be prepared to be patient and lose lots of sleep while learning how to do it.

#4 HI, like SP is not mandatory. I sometimes get it, sometimes don't. A lot of the time, I get sounds instead of imagery so it just depends. Whatever your method, just don't' fall asleep (mentally anyway) - that's the key. If you never see HI, try counting your breaths -that is very effective as well. Again, read LaBerge's book, it gives details on the best methods to induce LDs.

Oh, and try WBTB after 5 or 6 hours instead of 3-4 and try to do something mentally stimulating before you go back to bed. That will help you not fall back asleep so easily. Good luck!

thanks a lot guys i really appreciate the responses! i guess what i'll try next is to do it after like 5-6 hours of sleep and see how it goes... its good to know that HI is not necessary, but i do wonder how the transition is made into a dream if there are no HI to make the transition?
