Strange dream, why no lucid?

So last night I had a dream that has renewed my interest in LDing and dreaming in general. I dreamt I was in a jail. The strange part was I had all of the things everyone does. My dog was with me, my guitar was with me, phone was with me, and I was able to walk around outside. But for some reason it was the most depressing dream I think ive ever had. But it was also one of my most vivid while it was happening. I remember the water that took the place of streets (really should have thought something weird was up) Even the part of the town (which i live right next to) and the building it replaced. It was bizarre. But I dont get why i recognized none of this. I questioned reality on several occasions, and even acted on my curiosity. I thought, "why do they let me have a cell phone?" so I asked the DC, and he said "You have a cell phone!!! How?" And i just answered "Well, I woke up here" I even wondered, why did I wake up in my room with it being a prison? Why am I arrested when I got hit by a car? (strangely corresponding to the dream earlier in the night, when I think i was hit by a semi truck) But none of these questions apparently got anywhere. So, how exactly do you notice these things? I know that the answer is RC and keep a journal. But I am. How do you RC purposefully when nothing weird enough happens in my day to day life to really question reality?

How are you RCing currently? Do you do it randomly at certain times of the day in a habitual manner? Or do you do them reactively, like when something happens out of the ordinary? I personally suggest doing RCs only reactively. Be sure to really question your reality to see if you're dreaming. You may think that nothing happens out of the ordinary but it can be really simple like someone messing up a coffee order, a strange caller ID, a stain on your shirt etc... Also, if you do random RCs make sure to question reality along with them, don't do a nose pinch or a text check without thought.
