The main part of a MILD is working on your prospective memory- your ability to remember to remember to do things, without relying on external cues (like a string around your finger or a note on your door).
You essentially train yourself to remember to RC. Not necessarily when you see a dream sign or something odd. Just to remember to do it. You can come up with a manta to help you. You can build up this memory ability by practicing throughout the day. Check out this thread if you really want to get good at it, which is crucial for a MILD to work.
In LaBerge's traditional MILD technique, he says one should start by awakening from a dream. Review the memory of a dream, and if there were any dream signs but even if there weren't, imagine that you had become lucid in the dream. How it happened, what you did right away (STABILIZE), and what you then went on to do. Once you've done this, you should be laying in bed reminding yourself to remember to reality check in your next dream. Keep telling yourself this and going through your dream memory.
Because this technique basically relies on your ability to remember to reality check, technically if you could get lucid by MILDs you would not need to reality check throughout the day at all.
And now imagine combining daytime RCs with MILD
