      Reality checks didn't induce lucidity

Hi, I'm pretty sure this is my first post here. I heard about LDing about two years ago, which was around the time I first joined this forum and lurked a bit. Never had that much success with it back then, and eventually just stopped thinking about it.

Recently though, I had a really vivid LD which rekindled my interest in dreaming. I've made amazing progress, after having that first LD I had one the next night, and the night after that and usually have one a night, even having two the other night. Would've been three if those reality checks didn't fail me. I'm really confident in my ability to LD, however, about two days ago something really weird happened.

I started in a DILD, and everything was awesome. I had a false awakening, but I was pretty sure I was dreaming because the apartment I was in I hadn't lived in for atleast six years. I went out in to the living area, 100% sure that I'm dreaming. So I look at my hands, but they're completely normal. I look away and look back, still normal. So I grab a piece of paper off the counter (a receipt from a grocery store) and look at it, it had pretty normal stuff on it, list of groceries and costs, address of the store, etc. I look away for a couple seconds, and look back expecting it to have changed. It was exactly the same, though... Usually, I would have done the nose RC, as that's never failed me, but I've had a cold the past couple days and wouldn't have been able to breathe anyway. I ended up going back in to my old room and sitting on my bed with a laptop, and ACTUALLY woke up shortly after.

What the hell happened? Is this even possible? Could I be remembering it wrong? I was under the impression that the text RC was one of those ones that could never malfunction like that.

Sorry for the long post, but I wanted to share my experience. Thanks in advanced to anyone that might be able to shed some light on this for me.

      All RCs can fail.

It all depends on your exposure to them, the circumstances, and of course the awareness.

If you do RCs throughout the day without much conscious awareness to them (undivided attention), then it's safe to assume you will do the same in dream.
You merely have to change your point of view slightly, and then that glass will sparkle when it reflects the light.

That's good to know. I don't do RCs throughout the day, but that night I had been doing them a lot in my dreams, even after I was lucid. That's the same concept though, right?

Oh, something I left out in my first post. My dad was sitting at the counter when I left my room the first time. After I did that first RC with my hands, I looked at my dad and told him I was dreaming, even though the RC had failed. He replied saying that I wasn't. That was when I grabbed the receipt, and so on. I don't know if it's relevant, but I thought I should mention it.
