      Afternoon nap WBTB

So I've been reading up on WBTBs and in many tutorials it says you can lucid in an afternoon nap... but how come? I thought you had to be in your 3rd or 4th phase of REM therefore would have to be asleep for at least 4 1/2 hours. Have I misunderstood or is there something different about afternoon naps and the sleep that takes place at night?

You go straight into REM during an afternoon nap. (I think)

you don't have to be in REM to dream...that's a myth.

There are also things like REM-onset sleep and satisfying your need for NREM in sleep/naps so that subsequent sleep/naps jump into short NREM periods and longer REM periods.

I would still like to see a study where they monitor nappers, perhaps this evening I will search harder for one because I've always wanted to get to the bottom of this. The amount of my lucids that are from afternoon naps is pretty high, but I seriously doubt your brain can tell the difference from "I am going to sleep for the night. Ooh! I've been interrupted and awoken 90 minutes in!" to "I'm going to sleep for 90 minutes!"

My guess is that, as you can dream and lucid dream in N-REM, you are simply becoming lucid during NREM sleep.

I always understood it as: when you napping, it's only half of your day. You can't do that in the evening because you are already tired from the whole day, so your sleep is much deeper than that lighty nap after lunch.

I think that youŽll fall straight into REM if you have woken up from rem, and youŽve not been up for more then 10 hours. The time depends.
