      Pre-consciousness: A requirement for DILDs?

Greetings to all that I haven't said Hi to. I'm a noob to this site but I've had quite a few "natural" LDs during my life.

Anyway, just a thought on becoming lucid from obious signs in a dream. (Sorry if this has been discussed before!)

I've noticed that I will have some pretty vivid dreams where reality checks will fail but that I don't notice them and subsequently don't become lucid. E.g. It will be daytime in the dream and I will take a look at my watch and it will say 10am and then a DC will tell me that it's really early and I'll look again and my watch will say 3am and I'll think, yeah, that is early and then it will get darker and the stars will even come out. That's a dead give away that I'm dreaming but I just don't realise it. It's weird because I kind of do realise it but don't act on it.

I know that this happens all the time but the point that I'm trying to make is that even though doing RCs the whole day gets you to do them in a dream, it doesn't mean that we will actually realise them when they happen. I think there is more to it. It's almost as if you need to already be conscious when it happens before it makes you conscious. If that makes any sense??

Anyone have any thoughts on this or any tips on increasing this state of "pre-consciousness/awareness"? (and don't say: "do more RCs"!) This could be a clue to a new technique or a way to improve DILDs.

I could also just be crazy and be talking rubbish! lol

Thanks for the link Shift. I’ve read that post before (as well as other RC threads). It wasn’t really what I was getting at. The RC posts seem to deal more with awareness as opposed to raising consciousness. But I guess the two work hand in hand. I was just wondering if there is any way to lift your state of consciousness in a dream besides doing more quality RCs?

I've always wondered the same thing.

Everyone of my DILDs have been through spontanious conciousness, rather than performing a RC.

How are you differentiating between consciousness and awareness? I have been using the two synonymously.

I guess you're right. I thought that there was a difference. I.e. you can be aware that something strange has happened in your dream (i.e. you see it happen) but not act on it because you're just not conscious enough.

Well, build into awareness the awareness of not only your environment, but your emotions, thoughts, behaviors, etc. You can be very aware but not lucid, because you're not aware of the right thing. That awareness of "This might be a dream, is it and why?" is what you're aiming for

Yes, that's what I'm talking about. Thanks for the tips, I'll definitely take them into account when RCing.

I use the nose pinch RC whenever I feel things are abnormal. It's never failed for me unless something distracted me before I did it.

Even then so, I'll start thinking about what would I do if I were lucid and try it....something simple, like hovering off the ground or making an object float, door close, ect ect.

I DILD a lot, but it's mainly due to noticing things that seem out of place. Something may happen twice. I'm some place I don't even remember going to. Certain people, things, and other objects not being there after the second time i look in that direction.

It's all about paying attention to the smaller details in life that help my "awareness". I don't use "typical" reality checks all day. RCs are verifications that insure me that I'm dreaming or not. While noticing a certain oddity is my true "reality check".

See how that works for you and let me know....if not you can always go back to checking your watch a million times a day
