Closing my eyes in dream makes me wake up. Help please?

This morning I had my 8th successful WILD

For the first time ever, I actually tried to do some stabilization before going off and doing lucid activities. The dream seemed stable, but I thought it would be a good idea just in case that because of instability that my dreams are ending whenever I close my eyes.

About 1 or 2 minutes into the dream, I was having sex with a DC and I closed my eyes for about 1 or 2 seconds... which caused me to wake up. It seems that whenever I close my eyes I wake up. I'm trying to not close my eyes... ever... but it's difficult as I do it out of habit.

Can someone please explain why this happens and/or also any tips or advice I can learn to not close my eyes/stay dreaming if my eyes do close?

Maybe the answer is to avoid sex... haha. It has happened to me when I was attempting to fly and I closed my eyes then.

Reallllly appreciate the help from anyone. Thank you.

As soon as I started having sex the pleasure was unbelievable... I closed my eyes five seconds into it.

Usually in my dreams, when I close my eyes then open them, I'm still in the dream. Maybe, if you do accidentally close your eyes, believe/expect that when you open them again you'll still be in you dream. Another possibility, is that you could try to see through your closed eyes, or try to stabilize your dream by rubbing your hands or something like that. Your problem might just be that when you close your eyes you subconsciously expect that this will cause you to wake up in the real world. Well, I hope that helped a little bit even though I'm not that experienced in LDing yet.

It did help. I had forgotten this, but I do think it may be a subconscious thought that closing my eyes would make me wake up. Actually, I may have thought that consciously once or twice.

The dreams seem very stable as far as I can tell. I did attempt to make the dream more stable this time, although this did not have a noticeable effect. I just about never have dreams that are vague or blurry, etc.

      Thanks and good luck!

I often close my (dream) eyes to more easily envision stuff I want to be around a corner or in my pocket. Just belive you will still be in your dreams when you open your eyes.

Also, it could be because your dream is mainly visual. When you close your eyes, you could try and stay stable by focusing on sounds, and if you cant, just feel the weight of your body standing on you legs. Anything to keep your brain busy.
On LD hiatus. Probably will start again around new years.

Or, you know -- randomly throughout this year and next.

If all else fails... don't close your eyes. It's a dream, there's no need to. The pleasure made you close your eyes. All you had to do was get rid of those pesky eyelids

It sounds like a preconceived notion you have buried somewhere in your brain that closing your eyes will cause awakening. This can only be eliminated with realization and practice. It could be that you aren't getting enough sensory input from the dream when you close your eyes. The way to fix this would be to get as much information as possible when your eyes are closed. Start rubbing something, smelling something, listening to something, tasting something, then close your eyes. You basically want to become even more stable than you were before. As long as you are still rooted in the experience of the dream, there is no reason that losing vision would cause you to lose the dreamscape. Hope this helps!

Although there is some good advice on this thread, there are a few other things that you could try. (Just so you know, I used to have this exact same problem.)

First, come to the realization that 'there is no spoon.' In that, I mean you have no eyes- so there is actually nothing to close! Everything in your dreams is a different thought or perception manifesting itself, even your dream body. Why should closing your eyes in your dream screw with your dream, then? They are just 'percieved' eyelids, not actual eyelids at all!

Second, make sure that you aren't waking up into another dream. (FA.) FAs can be the worst bane or the best boon of the lucid dreamer. Always always always RC if you seem to be abruptly woken up from an LD.

Third, it's likely the action of opening your eyes which wakes you up, (since your eyes are probably already closed in RL to begin with.) If you do close your eyes, and become afraid that you will wake up as soon as you open them, just 'see through' your eyelids. It should be simple, just make your eyelids transparent through dream control. Now, I can open my eyes and close them in dreams without problems. But earlier in my LDing quest, I used the 'transparent eyelids' thing quite a bit! Try it out. Plus, it's a fun power!

      Hope these helped!

      Sincerely, Spockman.

I'm suprised no one brought this up. You could use the closing eyes thing to your advantage. For instance, if your dream is starting to fade anyway, close your eyes to wake up, all the while telling yourself to stay still when you do. tell yourself to not even open your eyes in your real body. Once your awake, and you haven't moved, play back your previous dream until you reach SP and eventually drift back into a dream. Hopefully, you would have just performed a DEILD, which is basically a mini WILD. You can do this even if you close your eyes accidentally during the dream and wake up, just as long as you make yourself stay still when you wake up into your real body. This way you can save your lucid dream.

However, I also agree with Spockman about the FAs. To see if you just had an FA when coming out of the dream, but you don't want to move because you might break a DEILD, simply close your throat and try to breathe. Some people might not know how to do this, so here is one of the ways to. If you already know how, great for you. If you don't, try to swallow. Notice how you use muscles in your mouth and throat to do this. After you swallow, keep the muscles that you used tensed up, and you should'nt be able to breathe (unless your dreaming....Reality Check!!!).

If you have any other questions, don't be afraid to post

[edit] I suppose you could also make closing your eyes a reality check. If you aren't dreaming, then you will be able to open them and find yourself in the same place. If you are dreaming, then you will wake up. Just be sure to make it a habit that when you reality check with closing your eyes you remain completely still, so as to not ruin the chance for DEILD if you ARE dreaming.

awesome! I have actually done a DEILD before so I kinda know what it's like.

thank you all so much for your insightful answers! you answered all my questions and more. thanks again and like I said before I'm not done with this thread
