For purposes of clarification let it be known that a WILDs intent is to directly enter the dream state in lucidity. And a HI-ILDs intent is to grow in awareness so that you may while dreaming be more likely to have a DILD or better do MILDs and even have better experience to attempt a WILD.

HI-ILD: Hypnagogic Imagery - Induced Lucid Dream
Hypnagogic Imagery is the colorful or white images you see when you are going to sleep and paying attention to the back of your eyelids. Even now if you close your eyes you can focus on Hypnagogic Imagery. This is the "stuff" dreams are made out of, in other words HI is the 'dream essence'. HI increases to form full dream scenes. HI is the focus of the HI-ILD method. The purpose of HI-ILD is to increase your Lucid Awareness. The purpose of HI-ILD is NOT to enter a dream in lucidity from being awake, this would be a WILD.
The HI-ILD Method
1) Find a comfortable place to lay down. You are now going to fall asleep, so relax.
2) Be paying attention to the HI as it rises and falls. Realize while you watch the HI that it is the essence of dreams. Thus do treat the HI as you would a dream.
3) Treat that realization the same as if you had just realized you were dreaming. Now as if you were dreaming and had become aware of this fact, become lucid of the HI.
4) Keep your awareness of the HI lucid. Knowing that HI is the very "stuff" dreams are made out of.
5) Just as you very easily lose lucidity in a dream, you will lose lucidity of the HI. Repeat steps 2, 3, and 4.
6) Fall asleep and hope you will become lucid by a DILD or some other means.

"Lucid awareness is like a muscle, if you excercise it it will grow." HI-ILD is based on this metaphor and its purpose is to excercise that awareness. You may find after the very first HI-ILD that your dreams become more vivid. You will probably have a semi lucid dream after every HI-ILD. This means your Lucid Awareness is being excercised and is growing. Soon your lucid awareness may grow so that you lucid dream every night. If you feel that you don't want to lucid dream that much, then lay back on the HI-ILD excercising.
