[WBTB Trouble] Waking up to much before a attempt because I need to urinate!

      Hey everyone.

The other night I tried a WBTB.
Get up 3:00AM> Toilet> Sip of water> attempt.

After all of this I was to awake, so the next night...
      Get up 3:00AM> Toilet> attempt.

But still I'm awake to much.

I was thinking, what if I do this...
      Get up 2:00AM> Toilet> Record Dream> Sleep> Get up at 3:00AM> Record dream> Attempt.

Anyone think this will work? Also don't know if this makes a difference but I have began recording my Dreams on my Ipod touch as a Voice memo... Does anyone think that whispering to record a dream will wake me to much?

      Thanks for all your help!

      Hey Dylan,

I just realized the other day that when I write down my dreams it wakes me up too much and I sometimes cant get back to sleep. I think I:ll go back to what I originally did, which was to just lay there, keep my eyes closed, and review the dream in words in my head as if I'm telling it to a friend. It's important to actually subvocalize though, or I tend to forget everything.

As for the bathroom, don't know what to tell you there. Maybe make sure you don't drink or eat anything for 3 hours before you go to bed? But then I always have to hit the bathroom the 1st time I wake up too. I have a bad habit of taking an apple and sometimes a bagel to bed with me.

I have no idea if your plan might work... wait actually, aren't REM periods 90 minutes apart? So you might be better off switching from 3AM to 3:30. A little experimenting should pin it down for ya.

My first thought is that getting up and "just" drinking a sip of water is not really a WBTB since you're not actively engaging your conscious mind for a decent length of time. I could be wrong on that. As for being too awake... I have this same problem. I would recommend getting up earlier in the sleep cycle or not getting out of bed at all when you wake up. If I do go the bathroom. I don't turn on any lights... I go there and straight back and immediatley back to sleep. From there I try to use MILD or WILD, which are pretty much the thing depending on whether or not you retain consciousness into the Lucid. Otherwise I wake up and then attempt to go right back to sleep using MILD or WILD without going to the bathroom or engaging in any activities. Everyone's sleep cycle is different and different people are able to fall asleep faster than others, so don't feel like you have to always do it after 6 hours. Anytime I do it after six hours, its a futile effort. Keep experimenting until you find the right balance of being sleepy enough to get back to sleep and finding that sweet spot in your sleep cycle.

The bathroom light. Dont turn it on. Computer screen, keep it off. Bedroom light, keep it off.

      Dylan.

I've started attempting WILD and WBTB, what I've being doing atm is to sleep from 10pm till 6am (8 hours), then when I get up, use a dim light on my phone to light up my DJ. I only jot the key notes down, and don't spend much time writing - I think it'd wake me up too much. I've never had to the need to use the bathroom, but when you gotta go, you gotta go - I don't think it would ruin your WBTB, like others have said though, having bright lights may wake you up too much.

If your whispering, I think it'd be even better then writing, I think it'd take less effot to do it that way! I'm not sure about the 'sleep an extra hour', I've never tried it so it might be a good idea, but I don't think it would change much.

I also find myself getting too awake when I try WBTB, I'll lay in bed and I'll feel as if I can't get to sleep - next thing I realise is that I'm waking up having fallen asleep! The tips I would recommend you try are:

      • Reducing the time you're up and about
      • Limiting the amount of bright lights
      • Keep your journal recording short
      • Change the time you're asleep for

If your sleeping for 8 hours and your too awake, try 6-7 instead. If your only sleeping for a short time before trying WBTB, say 3-4 hours, try increasing the time your asleep - the extra time asleep will make you more tired when you wake up. Just try and find what works for you, but mostly enjoy finding it out! Good luck, J.

I had a problem this morning where i only slept for like three hours and i couldnt get back to sleep again. I popped 3mg of melatonin, turned on a subliminal lucid audio track someone uploaded around here, and listened to it while i relaxed trying to sleep in my bed, and after about 10 minutes took my headphones off, rolled over, and bam, sleep paralysis and then straight into a lucid dream.
