I have done some reading about machines that create sounds and/or visuals that can cause a person's brain to enter certain brain wave states. I have never tried one, but I am interested in knowing how well they work. What I would love to be able to do is come out of a transcendental meditation, which always leaves me in an alpha brain wave state for about 1-3 minutes and often a partial state for an hour or more, and get a mind machine to keep me in that state while I do whatever, something other than thinking a mantra. I would like to be in an alpha state and walk around a zoo, for example. Is it really possible to achieve such a thing with one of those machines, and to what extent?

have you tried to keep meditating after you're up and moving. what i mean is, even though you are moving, acting, thinking, and even talking, you should try to simply stay in that state, dont let your mind talk extensively. this reminds me of recently when i was meditating, and had to go to work. even after a 30minute drive, and talking to a few people before i left, my boss was able to tell that i wasnt in a normal state of mind when i got to work. he said my eyes looked "glassy"

      Universal Mind,
I don't really think there is a actual yay or nay on this.
I am not familiar with the ones you posted. But they seem to work in a similar way.
I first started to get interested in this through the Monroe institute. They have their patented Hemi-SyncŪ Tech that they claim works.

There is also Holosync by Centerpointe. I have heard that they have improved upon the research.

Then you have white noise and binaural beats.
These are used to get the brain waves to work at full efficiency, much like meditation would.

Some claim they do work, others claim it's a hoax.

Though my own experience the Hemi sync CDs that I did buy did not work for me.
I have not invested in the Holo sync.

I was given a CD with binaural beats.
This has seemed to have an effect on me. I am not in the trial stage either. After 5 months of using this white noise I am at a more lucid, clear state of mind. It is only temporary.
I do not know if you can obtain this by yourself. Many claim you can through meditation techniques.

Thanks, Howetzer. I will start out by looking into the binaural beats CD's. If that stuff can work for me, it will be a major breakthrough in my lifestyle.

People have told me my eyes look glassy after meditation too. Then again, people tell me my eyes look glassy when I have not done anything.

I have never tried continuing to meditate after I open my eyes. I need to check that out. I have tried going through the whole meditation with my eyes open, and that didn't give me as good of an effect as doing it with my eyes closed and opening them when it is over. I have also tried meditating with my eyes closed and keeping them closed for about 30 minutes after I finish. That was pretty cool, but nothing beats meditating with my eyes closed and then opening them. Continuing after I open my eyes sounds like it has potential. Thanks.

I'd love to hear your experiences if you are able to get your hands on a mind machine/sound and light machine, simply because you already have experience with meditating and thus altering your brain waves. I'm more at the other end of the spectrum...I have a mind machine tha tI use and I'm interested in meditation but don't practice it. (at least not yet)

I have a Sirius Sound and Light Machine and I LOVE it. I use it to calm myself down at the end of the day and go to sleep. I just got it for Christmas so I havne't had a chance to use it much except at night for this purpose. I can't attest to whether or not it will allow you to continue in an alpha brain state but for me I can say:

      1) I feel very relaxed after a 20-30 minute session that is intended to cause relaxation.
(Could possibly be a placebo effect: I am afterall lying there, eyes closed, completely focused and still with my hearing and vision cut off from the external world)

      2) The light shows are fantastic.

      3) Occasionally it induces wisps of hallucinations.

      4) For $100 it's worth it.

PS BTW you can get a free CD of binuaral beats from http://www.hemi-sync.com. I'm currently waiting for mine. http://www.brainwave-entrainment.com/ is also a cool place for this sort of thing, although I'm not sure what they have for free (if anything.)

BenQ, thanks. I recently ordered a free Holosync demo CD. I used it the other day. They said that it was not the ultimate form, but just a taste of what the real thing could do. Whatever the case is, it put me into a really cool relaxation state. I didn't feel a rush/euphoria when I opened my eyes, but it left me in a crisper and more relaxed mental state. I can't get those rushes from meditation either when I have a bunch of pot in my system, which I have definitely had lately. I'm going to see what that demo does in about three weeks. It looks like there is probably something more to it than just chilling out while you listen to music, but I'll find out for sure soon. Once my meditations can work well again, I'll be ready to find out exactly what Holosync can do for me.
