There are many techniques of meditation, each one is very different. On some techniques you are supposed to breath normally.
Regardless to which technique you choose to study, my advice is that in order to make real progress you should learn meditation in a course with a real teacher, and not just from books or the Internet.
A generous heart, kind speech, and a life of service
and compassion are the things which renew humanity.

What type of meditation do you do? Different things happen with different meditations, so what your goals are and what type of meditation you do.

I'll give you an example using the meditation method I made from the skeleton meditation. I want to become closer to nature and my surroundings as well as say have a way to let go of my emotions and ground myself. This is the meditation I use to get those results.
Imagine yourself stiitng or laying on a grassy field, with trees, bushes, and maybe some animals. This place represents the earth, not just another plane of your mind. Now Imagine your skin (including muscles, organs, etc) is melting off of you and returning to the earth. Now with your skin goes all of your worries, your fears, and your cares; imagine them melting off of you and leaving you. All you are is form. Now imagine your skeleton crumbling and turning to ash, feel your self being released from the restriction of having a set form. Now all that should be left of you is your mind, your essence. If you want to explore your mind this is the perfect oppertunity to do so, otherwise imagine a wind blowing your ashes away and causing you to become one with the earth. You can feel the grass and the trees and the wind like it is a part of you. You can feel the animals' soft foot steps ontop of the earth because the earth is a part of you and you of it. You can feel the earth's energy flowing through you. After you are done, imagine the wind blowing again and kicking up some leaves, grass, dirt, etc and them coming together and reforming your skeleton. You are returned to your form. Imagine skin growing back over your form, returning every last part of you, making you whole, but leaving the worries and fears you had before to return to the earth and disappear. You should now feel reenergized and restored.
See what I'm talking about? Different meditations cause you to feel different ways because they are geared towards different things. If the meditation technique you're using doesn't work for you, use a different one.

      hope this helps,

Remember from where you came, and stay true to your ideals. There is no place for those who have lost their souls.
