Meditation and God

Greetings, i am fairly new here so go easy on me! My understanding of things so far is that when you lie down to have an OBE the fact that your body is in that position somehow helps to have the OBE. Whereas if you sit in a meditation posture there is less likelihood that you will go out of your body? I ask this because i have been reading yoga material that says that if you sit with your back straight and intone a mantra to concentrate on and lift your gaze slightly so that you are staring into the darkness behind closed eyes slightly above the normal straight gaze (ie the third eye point), the energy of your astral body will rise to the pineal gland and you will behold the spiritual eye. THe spiritual eye manifests in such a way that if you get it correctly it should look like a golden ring around a blue colour with a white 5 pointed star in the centre. This is according to the material i have been reading. THe purpose of this is to penetrate your consciousness through this spiritual eye into the star to get cosmic consciousness. Cosmic consciousness represents God beyond duality in an infinite oneness consciousness of bliss. What i want to know is if anyone here knows anything about this? THe spiritual eye is like the NDE tunnel. It seems like if people are interested in God they wouldn't fiddle with OBE. To make it more clearer, the spiritual eye looks like a tunnel because you are looking inner dimensionally through your brain and down your spine, which means you are looking through the chakras. light at the third eye is also accompanied by sound, which is the sound of the chakras or OM vibration.

OK, in my first Yoga class, out of nowhere, I was on the floor meditating and I saw this shape that you described. I had never seen anything like this before. Except, it wasn't blue, it was violet, surrounded by gold light. The center was somewhat like a star, though with may more than 5 points. It was like looking at an actual star, like you'd see in the night sky. I still see this thing every night, though I really have no idea what it is, what it means, or how it is used (if at all). It does look like a tunnel though, with an actual sense of movement through the center. There is no sound, however. I've had 3 or 4 near out of body experiences, where I've felt myself lift away from my body. I don't think God and OBE's have anything to do with each other. An OBE is a way to experiment with your powers as a consious and creative being. Will it bring you closer or further from God? It will bring you closer or further from your body. Everyone can do it and it allows us to explore the astral plane, which again, doesn't necessarily have anyting to do with God. It is just another place, another neighborhood that we can explore. Now, if you feel as if all realities are projections of a cosmic consciousness (God's Mind), then you might consider the OBE a better way of exploring that territory, though the same can be accomplished while awake and in the physical world. What mantra are you speaking about? Is it something you could post here? I'd like to try it out!

Hi Adam, Fascinating experiences you have here! I've heard of the blue colour being spoken of as violet as well. Yes i think you are right - OBE and God are two different things. What you've said here is enough. I can't give you the exact mantra as i'm not certain i have the liberty to do so. It is a different rendering of So Hum. I think it should be ok to tell you though. It is part of the teachings of Paramahansa Yogananda. It is Hong Sau (pronounced hong like song, and saw). The sound of this mantra sounds like the sound your breath makes as it goes in and out and the movement your lungs make is related to pranic currents situated around the spine called Ida and Pingala. If you practice this mantra you must speak it silently in your mind along with your breathing. But the most important thing of all is that you MUST NOT consciously or unconscious control and hold the breath! Just let it flow. When it pauses, either on the exhale or inhale, don't hold the breath but wait for it to flow again. The purpose of this mantra is to calm the breath. But it is part of a whole system of yoga that you should study as a unit from the teachings of Yogananda. As to the spiritual eye, you should have intuitive visions within it, you should see the astral world, angels, saints, etc etc and lots of other things. But the purpose of the eye is that you should penetrate the star. This would be like nirvana.

Interesting...I subscribe to his teachings, but I have to admit, I haven't been keeping up with the readings because I've been so bogged down with work. But some day I'm sure I'll discover the mantra you're talking about within the lessons. As for the spiritual eye, I'm definitely going to try "penetrating" it. I tried this once and the energy that came forth nearly fried my brain, literally. It felt like my brain was on fire for a second. I don't think I was ready for it at that point. We shall see... Thanks for the information!
