I got also into meditation recently, like you said, there are many techniques, but each one of them comes down to focussing attention, even clearing your mind or relaxations comes down to how pure and how long you can hold one thought or feeling. When attempting a WILD, or staying lucid in dreams, this is exactly what you need to be good at it. The closer I get to a transition when WILDing the more my thoughts start to stray, so meditation is really helpful for me.
Anyway, my favorite meditation technique is attention on the flow of breath, because you can do this anywhere, anytime, even during class when there's nothing interesting going on for example. Doing this, you can consciously start to breath more deeply each breath, because it is naturally very shallow, we only use a very small portion of our lung capacity in normal situations. It will make you more relaxed, more alert, increase oxygen flow to the brains, its main energy source. The brains use 30% of the oxygen you breath. This will also give you a lot more energy because the body also burns oxygen all the time for energy. A lot of benefits for a simple change in habit. If you're hardcore, you could actually always breath full breaths, a sort of meditation 24/7.
