What are these sounds and voices I hear when falling asleep?

Am I so complicated that my own mind reviews everything that I did during the day? I mean, ever since young I keep hearing noises and sounds and including voices of things that I heard during that day and other days before it. This may be a normal thing for everyone because they may just ignore it or its just not as strong as mine is or they just dont know its going on in their heads. But its a real bother to me. I mean sometimes when falling asleep I hear my name being called out by someone and I wake up startled by it. Then recalling it during the day that I was called by somebody in the same manner. But there are also the noises, like a grocery basket rolling down a side walk and getting closer. Or simple car noises, people walking, laughing, and even dogs barking. I am trying to tame this type of thinking but I dont have control over it. Its like closing your eyes and seeing the last images that you last remember in your head. I am just try to ignore it from now on, but I cant seem to ignore the voices though, its very difficult not to respond to your own name being called.

Anyone have this type of problem?
When I dream, theres always a
little girl playing in the dirt, that
turns to me and says "Why are
you here? .... Are you blind like
      me?"

      What I've found
      What I've known
Never shined to me what I've shown
      Never be
      Never free
I wish to see what might have been...
...So I talk to you unbeliever.

I walk in the rain. 1111

Lately as I've been falling asleep every now and then a noise in my dreamlet will sound like it was in reality and it will cause me to lose the dreamlet and fully awaken.

      Yes

Yea those are Hypogogic Hallucinations, it just happens when you consciously are aware during your stage 1-2 sleep. Most people don't have that problem, for the very reason you said. They simply don't experience them consciously and then therefore don't remember. Essentially, you have no control over those noises. It's much like being a Paranoid Schizophrenic and hallucinating, not being able to stop hearing the voices or whatever noise. Only in this case it is natural in that brain state of falling asleep.

Those Hypogogic Hallucinations also occure during the time you are waking up and still asleep. Consider yourself lucky, because the Hypogogic Hallucinations are an excellent way to anchor yourself and fall right into a dream or to sleep.

If you were to imagine yourself coming closer to the voices or sounds and try to intensify it when its happening, you could theoretically pull yourself into a dream.

As for it bothering you... The only suggestion I have is to tell yourself as you fall asleep that "you will ignore any and all sounds as you fall asleep."

      Good-Luck,

      -Daniel

I often hear music, and lots of the time its music i'ver never heard before. And i also have lil day dreams occasionaly too. I also occasionaly hear these voices, but they are always very dimmed, and if i try to focus on them they stop.

But i am not a natural LD'er i've only ever had 1 good one and that was a few years ago, before i knew what they actually were.

Hey!!!! use this to your advantage. I have this a lot. Although I never can actually put use to it in the waking world or remember how it went, when I here music I concentrate on it, which leads me into a vivid state where I can conduct if you will how the music is composed.

When the voices are threatening to kill me and asking others if its okay, I don't really want to get closer to them. Besides, they are talking right into my ear! Scary stuff. Although, once I heard a child laughing some distance away.

Dude, who cares what they are saying or doing. People have nightmares in dreams and yet they still face it and keep going to sleep. Just remember they can't really do anything to you, since their not really real in the sense that we know it. If you draw closer to them and go to the source, you'll be able to face these people who are threatening to kill you. Voices like that usually mean you have some pyschological issues you need to face, so face them.

Hypogogic Hallucinations are a bridge from waking to dreaming/sleeping. If you cross it, you could easily have a WILD or some kind of awe inspiring experience. So why not do it?

It's hard to concentrate when I'm laying in SP, being attacked by evil entities that are messing with my mind. The last thing on my mind is prolonging it. I've had an amazingly real LD where I walked around my house, and that sorta came from one incident, so who knows. It's scary stuff though. Totally real and I feel helpless.

Yea, thats understandable. I'm just trying to make the point that its possible to use it as a bridge. No doubt its not easy and in your case not pleasent. Good-Luck with that.

      Good point..
Things like bad dreams & thoughts can be overcome. Chances are that if the first time you had woken up to SP and it was not unpleasnant then this thread would have never been made, Since you have had a negetive effect it only manifested into worse things---- until you break that change by reassuring youself that in SP nothing is going to hurt you. Holy crap dude, the same thing happens to me whenever I sleep in a strange place. It's like, when I'm at home sleeping, I'm more comfortable so I guess I don't notice it. But if I sleep in a slightly agitated state, I hear voices and all kinds of random crap. I used to think they were ghosts when I was young. Scared the Gezus out of me.

The worst it ever got was when I tried to take naps in the listening library in college. I would gradually slip into HI, then I would hear like 4 or 5 people talking/whispering around me. I would wake up because I thought people were coming in to use the listening library, but as soon as I'd wake up, the voices stopped and I was alone again.

I'm guessing it's just HI, but more of the auditory than the visual. I don't know how uncommon it is, but I agree that it's pretty weird.

      THANK GOD I'M NOT INSANE

Wow I feel so much better. This happened to me for the first time last night and I made a private entry into my dream journal, and was trying to decide if I should make it public. I was going to post it in a forum and was looking for one to post it in, and found this one. I can't tell you how relieved I am that this happens to other people. Here is my entry:

"Last night I chatted with a DV member who recommended trying to get in touch with my subconsious before sleeping and try self-hypnosis to induce LDing. I was VERY tired but not on any drugs or anything like that. Every time I closed my eyes, before I could even get into that almost dreaming state, I kept hearing voices in my head. Like, little snippets of conversations from different people's voices (none that I recognized). They were random and I can't remember any specific sentences but I heard them pretty clearly at the time. Along with the voices, I was also seeing rapidly changing random images. Some were normal, like people's faces I did not know, or places I'd never seen, and some were terrifying. One was about a fire and a woman screaming. This was the last one I had and the most clear. I opened my eyes and was like, "what the FUCK." Finally I said "get out of my head" out loud and they just STOPPED. About 5 minutes later as I was starting to doze off I clearly heard a male voice say "FUCK YOU." I leapt out of bed and starting freaking out. I finally turned on the radio to look for classical music. As I was searching AM radio for classical, I for some reason, stopped on one of the many talk stations I came across. I don't know why I listened that one but I realized they were talking about a fire that had occured somewhere nearby and sounded serious. I don't know where or when it happened, I was too freaked to find out. I found the classical station and lied down like I did when I was a kid with my nitelite and teddy. I felt like a kid scared of monsters in my closet. I started thinking, "am I insane?" The voices stopped and I eventually fell asleep, like an hour later and do not remember if I had any dreams or not. I usually at least remember something, some minor detail upon waking (if not almost every detail like usual, as you can see from previous posts). I didn't recall a thing.

Ok back in college I tried LSD a couple times and theses "voices and images" would happen as I was trying to sleep and I actually thought they were kind of cool, but not worried b/c I figured it was just a drug induced hallucination. but this time I was not doing any type of hallucingen or anything. I had a couple beers earlier, but that's normal and I was most certainly not drunk.

Am I crazy? Has this happened to anyone? I felt like the voices and images were things that were actually happening somewhere and when I heard about the fire I really began to wonder. Let me reiterate that I was NOT ASLEEP when these things were going on."

Again, I feel much better after reading this topic. As for the fire thing, I'm assuming it's just a coincidence. Hopefully the voices will stop the hostility but now I know I'm not crazy! If anyone has any further input about my particular incident, please PM me or reply. Thanks!
