I made a thread on Astral Projection and posted several books good for beginners. Though I'm just beginning and have not yet Astral Projected, I found that these books are best to read for beginners like myself. I highly recommend you read Out of Body Experiences by Robert Peterson, Journeys Out of Body by Robert Monroe and Otherwhere by Kurt Leland. You should read Out of Body Experiences by Robert Peterson first as it is setup in a very user friendly way for the beginner.

If you are able to recall 18 lucid dreams you are already on the best path! I would keep at it. Many of the OBE techniques or "spiritual exercises" are pretty similar to WILD techniques. Especially if you consider that in a deep meditation session I bet one may be technically asleep or nearly so. If you don't already meditate, you should also take it up. Don't get involved too deeply with just one school of thought on meditation, explore several types with and without a mantra.
One school of thought is that you (or reality as a whole), has several layers between the soul and physical body. Different paths name different numbers, tend to make 4 or 5 divisions or classes of layers. The one immediately above the Physical is usually considered to be the Astral, and within that are more layers. Supposedly if you "project" from a particular level you are striped down to your body that corresponds to that level and the goal is to exit with the finest one you can manage. But better yet to just "Be Here Now", (be there in soul, now). Just don't get too locked in to any particular path or belief system. They all seem to mix truth with dung and leave it to you to figure out whats what!

      Astral Dynamics by Robert Bruce.

(Although I don't know how valuable my suggestion is. I haven't ever had an OBE.)

"Adventures beyond the body" by William Buhlmann is also an excellent book for beginners.
