Was speaking about lucid dreaming to other dream figures a rare occurrence?

Actually no. It might be because you've been so interested and obsessed (I have, hehe) with lucid dreaming that your subconscious picks up the idea of lucid dreaming, and will carry on into your dream. For example, a few months ago I was extremely obsessed with lucid dreaming and like you, had a dream about telling someone about lucid dreaming. "

Thanks for the reply, ya I researched later and found that it should've been called a reality check although I don't remember thinking to do it the first time, I noticed and then figured that out. The part I found weird was that after I spoke to the figures I proceeded to realize I was dreaming while doing that, that is what freaked me out.

Will my hands always be screwed up in dreams? Is this now my dream sign?

First of all, congratulations on your first lucid dream! It's a pity mine lasted 5 seconds and have yet to have a full lucid dream. But I have been on the forum for quite a while and I hope my answers might be useful.
Anyway, I believe that your 'screwed-up' hands are more of a reality check:

      Looking at Your Hands:
It is unknown why, but in dreams hands tend not to look right. They occasionally look blurry and you can't see lines or fingerprints on them. Sometimes the fingers mix together and you find it difficult to count how many fingers you have.
You notice something odd, then you proceed to check your hands to see if you're dreaming. That, is a reality check.

Dream signs, on the other hand, are signs, humans, places etc that tend of recur in your dreams, hence whenever you see your dream sign you probably dreaming and you can do a reality check to confirm.

I visited an island I've seen in multiple non LD's (there’s also always a sunset) with huge buildings and beach houses.
If those bolded items are recurring in your dream, they are most probably your dream sign. For me, most of my dreams always end up in school, and that is a dream sign. I will be reminded to do a reality check when I'm in school for real, so this will carry on into my dreams and hopefully induce a lucid dream.
