How do I even think while dreaming?

Ok, I've read through the site and everything, browsed the forums for a long time. That night I went to bed and wanted to try LD for the first time. To my surprise I was somewhat aware I was dreaming but not enough so that I could tell myself ok, your just dreaming do whatever you want. I see all these people trying these different techniques to look for signs in their dreams that they are indeed dreaming. But wait, this doesn't make sense to me, if you start looking for clues that you are dreaming, hell wouldn't you have to realize your dreaming in the first place to look for these cues!! I couldn't concentrate in my dream, I subconciously let it all flow.

Can anyone tell me what to do to actually start looking for clues in my dreams. Or maybe I could just try WILD...

Well, the idea is that if you make looking for said clues a HABIT during your waking life, then that habit would carry over to the dream state. But I do agree that there are times when I just kinda suspect it, but am not 100%, and things just go normally. At that point, if you do a proper RC, and you consciously notice it fail, then you will be more lucid. I just look at my hands. Simple, effective, elegant.

hmmm, maybe my brain is overcomplicating it...
Maybe i should just look at my hands, see if my rings are where they are supposed to be..

Possibly you refer to low-lucidity. I have the same problem too but not so intense. Well, I think the only you can do is to wait. Experience may make you better at it. I clearly know what you mean. You say that you are dreaming but you dont really believe it.

Improve your dream recall, it may help. Nothing more , nothing less.

When I look at my hands, they're sort of deformed... Either the finger count is off, or finger lengths are ridiculously off, etc. It seems to be a good test for a lot of people on here...

yeah... don't ya just hate it, not-so-lucid lucid dreams.

      "Hey, I'm dreaming!"
      .......
"Ok, I guess thats cool, where was I... Oh yeah, some fake dream task with no point that seems really important in my dream..."

I always get distracted so much.

Maybe, you just need to think about what you want to do the next time you have a lucid dream, then write that into your subconscious with self-hypnosis, then you'll know what you want to do the next time your Lucid Dreaming.

you have to keep doing reality chekcs and looking for clues in your real life .. this way it becomes a habit, and you will do it in dreams even if you didn't know it was a dream .. and the RC will hopefully work and you will suddenly notice that this is a dream.

One RC that always works for me is trying to remember "how I got here" or "what happened before now"
For example, I was once dreaming I'm at my aunt's house (she lives in another country!), and I suddenly thought "hey, when did I get here? is this a dream?? no no .. it's too real! but wait, how did I come here?" I tried to remember how I got there, but I couldn't!
I still wasn't sure that it's not a dream, so I aksed her "am I dreaming?" she said "I don't know" Then I tried to put my finger through my palm infront of her (to show her that I am dreaming!) but I immediatly woke up.

That was kind of stupid .. it was obviously a dream .. I didn't need any RC, the moment I realized that there was no "past" I should've been %100 sure of this being a dream.

Yesterday I had a very short LD, I tried the "finger through palm" test but it failed, so I thought that this wasn't a dream, but then I realized I'm at my aunt's house! so I knew it's a dream (even though my other RC failed).

Yes the finger thru the palm trick hasnt worked for me, but closing ure nose with the hand, and then seeing if u can still breathe thru ure noes, has worked perfectly for me as a RC
