I find it hard to prolong my lucid dreams. I have read many topics by people saying about their dreams fading and it's always similar advice: rubbing hands, dream spinning, etc. But what my problem is is telling when the dream is starting to end. I can never feel it. It just stops. Any suggestions?

Well, all I can think of is always thinking "keep this dream going" or 'This dream will keep going" But that'd be tough. Maybe you could summon a beeper or something to tell you that your dream will end soon, and you should start thinking it.

once the LD fades, just lay in your bed and dont move much. Visualize the last clear scene/image from the faded LD. Focus on it and there's a high chance that you will be able to reenter the LD you were having within a minute or two.

If you need more info check the "dream reentry tutorial" in the tutorial section.

An alternate method which I'm fond of is exerting no control on the dream at all. Exerting control in lucid dreams tend to reduce the length of it, it seems.
      DOH!

Thanks for the ideas. I will try BeautifulDreamer's idea. It sounds like it could work.

I have no problem with dream re-entry, but I want my dreams to get longer.

Is there a limit to how long you can prolong one dream in a night?

The hand rubbing technique works for me as well.

But I really like BeautifulDreamer's idea too. It would be awesome for a beeper to go off when the dream is getting near an end. Im not sure if that would terminate it or help you prevent it from ending or even if it would actually go off...

      A good experiment though.

I had a lot of trouble prolonging LDs as well in my first few. I tried spinning, hand rubbing and whatnot, but everything failed. And then I realized my problem was stressing too much about waking up, and everntually I did
Since most of my LDs have been DILDs so far (read:random), I decided to stop wasting my time stressing about waking up, and going with the flow. Instead of thinking about how long it would last, I thought about the content of the dream, following wherever I was supposed to go, exerting little or no control at all, but my own decisions. Using this, my last few LDs lasted quite longer than the previous ones.

This works pretty well. Long time ago I used this method. What I would think is "This Ld will last X days". Saying this removed all concern for the length of the LD and produced some very long LDs.

Rubbing hands doesnt work for a lot of people (including me).

      Rubbing Hands?

      what is that anyway?

The Evil Villian rubbs his hands and says "Woo ha ha" as he contemplates new evil.

      No.

You are supposed to glance down and look at your hands. and not just when you expect the end of the dream. To PROLONG a dream you must do this glancing at your hands all through the dream.

It is like prolonging your life. You can't just stop smoking, drinking, whoring and eating sugared lard on your 80th birthday in the middle of a heart attack and stroke and expect that you can suddenly "prolong your life". No, you must establish a healthy routine while still young.

Equally so, you must act to prolong your dream from the very commencement of the dream. You can glance down at your hands, every other moment, and deepen your breathing and increase the rate of your breathing -- that also strengthens, vivifies and prolongs dreaming.

Now I remember. This is the technique from "The art of dreaming", right? You are supposed to use your hands as some sort of an "anchor" for your lucidity. Every time dream blurs or fades glance at your hands to reinforce your lucidity.
