      Asking Around

This is a possible technique for those who have a tough time with certain aspects of dream control, like flying, materialism, etc.

In a few threads now, a lot of people have mentioned that need for confidence in your LDs for control to really work. I definitely agree with this. If you don't think that ice cream is gonna appear in your hand, it probably won't. But as many of us know, it's hard to overcome this confidence barrier. We may scream out "APPEAR YOU ICE CREAM CONE! I'M DREAMING, I AND CAN DO ANYTHING!", but for the life of us nothing happens. To these people (like me!), I suggest this:

Ask around in your dream! It's your mind. You'd be surprised at what comes out of dream characters' mouths when you ask them stuff about your dream. Ask that stange old man at the corner how to shoot fire from your hand. If you're like me, chances are you'll get an odd answer, if it makes sense at all. Many people tell me "you're not ready yet", which I accept (though I maybe shouldn't).

You may actually have someone give you instructions on how to do certain things. These may be very weird, like "dance a jig, then you can shoot fire!" Go ahead and do what the weirdoes say though. You may find that you gain your desired control ability! For me to fly, I need to jump as if I'm about to land flat onmy face. It's an odd technique, but I'd rather have to do something weird and be able to fly than not be able to at all!

This technique may not work for everyone, but it'll likely at least get you some amusing dream experiences, which makes it worth a shot. I find it can really help your confidence to be able to do certain "impossible" things in dreams. Unless you're REALLY lucid, your dream self stillt ends to accept a skewed dream world. That's why you can be in a lucid dream on another world and not really pay attention to how much different the world is sometimes. As such, even your lucid self is likely to accept what your dream characters say with little doubt - at least, less doubt then trying to snap your fingers and make something appear!

To those who are having trouble, give this a shot, or anything similar. The main point of this is - work WITH your dreams to get your desired results, not against them! Instead of saying "why won't this work?!", instead ask, "What can I do to make this work?" If asking people won't work, look for answers elsewhere. Meditate in your dream, read a book in your dream, look in ponds, mirror, anything that you think might give you answers! It's a lot easier than trying to force stuff, and it's a lot mor fun too - why waste a lucid dream being frustrated?

      Happy dreaming!

Thanks for the advice. The problem I have is not doing extrodinary things, but simple things like controlling where I am walking. I am lucid, but watching everything unfold. I give your advice a try though.

Great advice! I have trouble getting my dream characters to answer back though!

I walked around in a Wal-Mart one night asking everyone who I was and where I was. Must have been about 45 minutes. I asked everyone, shoppers, stock boys, cashiers, security.

Everyone just looked at me like I was looney. Nobody ever answered

Lol Seeker are you sure you were asleep?

That sounds like good advice to me. Working with your dreams does tend to be easier. Another example of this is that it is easier to change something you already have into what you want instead of materializing it from thin air.

Be careful about asking around though...i think the subconscious will try and trick you out of consciousness...through characters responses, and such.

i always attempt to fly then ask a dream character then they make me have some objects and it still doesnt work

i wish my mind was a little more alert then i could TRULY realize that anything i want to do is possible

instead when im lucid i can do what i want in terms of where i want to go and make people but i still think the laws of reality are stuck in my head

maybe with more practice i will get it

Had an interesting experience with this early this morning.

I had just succeeded in a WILD (yay!), and found my son beside me. I noticed he was not acting totally right, so I asked him who he was.

He just kind of looked at me in panic. When I asked him again, he backed up, turned and ran away.

      Really weird!

A lot of the time when I become Lucid the people in the dream dissapear as I become Lucid. Maybe I am putting to much focus on other things and should focus on the people. Because I certainly agree with you about the confidence part, I struggle with requests to. I think personalities come out while you are Lucid. I am not one to be very demanding in my waking life and part of me can feel this while I am Lucid. Like doubt. I feel doubt when I request somthing even though I know it is a dream.
The brain can be difficult somtimes.
I think that is some good advice Seeker
It has been suggested that I talk to dream characters for direction and advice as well.

Funny story. I will make it short!
I was dreaming and I have been pondering over selling my house but is very complicated (reasons to lenthy to bore you with). So I had a Lucid dream and I asked my mother who is no longer with me if I should sell. She said well if you don't know I couldn't tell you. (thanks for the advice there subconcious)

lol, Seeker. Maybe you just freaked him out because he was clearly your son and you were asking him who he was.

I wonder if dream characters are really just imaginary people...they could be spirits/guides/whatever who knows.
      They exist therefore they are.

"They exist, therefore they are" is an unfounded statement.

How do you know they exist?
