A really bad headache in the dream, or you physical head actually hurts? I feel that this is just a matter of will power. You have to decide (and really mean it) that your head doesn't hurt. You'll find that it doesn't.

Another thing to try: Try not to control your dreams, but instead be lucid walk around in the dream observing the dreamscape. After you feel you can do that easily, then try to control just a tiny little thing, like try to make a flower slightly move, as if there is a slight breeze. Do it bit by by, and if you feel the headache starting stop to try to control the dream and just observe it passively, then try again. This way you can maintain a steady level of progress on dream control.

      And welcome to DV, mezmeric!

It's all mental. There are no actual side effects of controlling your dreams. Ease in with passive control as dodobird, and remember that it's all in your head.

That, or have some dream tylenol.
