If you've had that same dream for two years then you should easily be able to recognize when you are dreaming.
Do a reality check, become lucid, and do whatever you want, or if its a bad dream then face up to it, defeat it, and it should stop.
Consciousness: that annoying time between naps.

      Question another ??

How do I defeat it. It's along story. being assulted , someone close to me dying made me have to move 3 times in one yr. How do you defeat something that is real everyday to me its real because it happened....Anything else you want to add feel free , I am open to all advice

sorry...were you describing your past? or your recurring dream? I'll presume and hope: Dream

the tricky thing is...it sounds like this dream is nothing like your reality. Therefore its hard to do the usual 'reality check' style.

For instance, if it was a regular dreamsign you would say. I will reality check everytime I am assaulted and hopefully it will become habit for my dream! BUT i hope you are not assaulted daily so you will need another method to become lucid!

      1. you could either try doing a Wake-Back-To-Bed with a MILD (check the tutorials section here --> http://www.dreamviews.com/community/...splay.php?f=25 ). This will involve you reminding yourself that you are about to dream...and are therefore more likely to dream. THis is pretty succesful for some...It used to work well for me.

      2. or you could try to develop a general better sense of 'awareness'. For instance...this involves being more aware of your surroundings so that you can
      a) notice changes in your surroundings
      b) detect when you are somewhere unfamiliar or non-real (like your dream)

here is a very long, but good guide on this

      http://www.dreamviews.com/community/...ad.php?t=34263

stick with it; and read the questions in thread...very helpful

...I would even try these both.

(of course...you are keeping a dream journal right?)

Good advice from Chris and James. One other thing; I don't think you should avoid sleep. Sleep is necessary for all aspects of your well-being; to keep yoursel in a sleep-deprived state will not help with these negative emotions you are feeling.

I think you should go to bed at a decent time. Before you go to sleep, and if you wake up at night, think about the dream and tell yourself that when you begin to experience it, you will realize you are dreaming. Becoming lucid during it will be the first step towards changing it.

Have you read Stephen LaBerge's "Exploring the World of Lucid Dreaming"? It has great advice on lucid dreaming in general, and in changing recurring nightmares as well.

wait Belladonna...did you edit your post? I SWEAR you had a whole story in there!

yeah...sleep deprivation is not good. BUT IT IS A GOOD SIGN that you still recall your dreams even when you are trying to avoid sleep!

I know the song called "Higher" by Creed is about Lucid Dreaming...because the lead singer used Lucid Dreaming to fix his recurring nightmares of being murdered or something?

Id say...simply work on getting Lucid like the rest of us! I just suggested those 2 links as some succesful and NOT TOO complex ways of getting there; but you will need practice and therefore sleep.

      I wish you goodluck!
