I DILD pretty much every night, too. Most of the time I just hang out and go with the flow -- follow the dream plot while knowing it is a dream. However I sometimes decide to do something else. When I first started to try to take control in my DILDs I had a really hard time. I couldn't control things, I'd become paralyzed or blind (or both), the dream would try to turn into a nightmare, etc. For a while it really felt like I was fighting with myself. I knew what was supposed to be possible, but couldn't make any of it happen. So frusterating!
For me I had two major breakthroughs in taking charge in my DILDs. The first happened when I finally got a DC (who I realized was a manifestation of my subconscious) to talk to me about what was going on, what I wanted, and what my subconscious wanted.
The second really was when I read the thread by The Cusp on the Nature of Dream Control. Gah... I plug that thread all the time... Anyway, it really has some great information. You should check it out. Here is a link. You don't have to read the whole thing. A lot of it has nothing to do with dreaming, but the basic principles are what is important. Hopefully at some future time The Cusp will decide to write up a tutorial on the subject.
