*This is the "directors cut" version

This must be the most intricate zombie dream I've ever had. Pity I can't recall the finer details.
It starts off in New York. I am with some of my friends. We are all having fun shooting each other with water pistols until some religious nuns start running around crying, telling us of doom.
Soon after we are told of a zombie outbreak. I tell you, this part of the dream is the most blurry.
I can't quite remember what goes on here, but its pretty much filled with major commotion and death on a large scale.
In the dream its just me and two other people. A woman and a man. I am aged a little older than IRL in this dream. I don't recognize these two people, but I know that they are suppose to be really good friends of mine and I trust them. They are aged about the same as me, maybe a year or so apart. For the sake of the story I'll call the woman Mona and the man Neil.
We run through the streets of New York. There are literally zombies everywhere. Its devastating.
"Okay, we are going to have to act like zombies, alright?" the Mona tells us. We walk through the roads, in plain sight, acting like zombies. They don't seem to notice us. I remember looking at two particular zombies. One of them had crazy black hair, a trench coat, and huge bags under his eyes. Oh and I also remember an innocent looking old lady, feeding off another human. It was disturbing.
Eventually we made it to the railway station. As we got there we all heard a massive heavy roar above us in the sky. As we all looked up, we saw the most terrifying thing ever. A massive passenger plane flaming in the sky. Fire bursting through its windows, smoke billowing out of its engines. We watched as it flew over head. Everyone was speechless. If zombies had got onto that plane, maybe the zombie virus was a ticking time bomb? For a moment I wondered if any of us had been infected.
We got into the train station. We moved quickly to the closest train. There were very few people on it. Most of them had guns, or had packed their bags and were trying to get to an isolated area.
I was quite thirsty so I went to get a drink. I wanted an L&P drink, so I picked it out. I went to pay for it. In my dreams, my wallet is always bulging with money. A smug looking member of staff made me pay a really expensive amount of money for it. There was only half the drink in there, and it tasted pretty average. Then he demanded I pay him again. I told him to fuck off, as we all got off the train.
We are back in my old city now. Its the scariest thing ever. Everywhere I look everything is abandoned. I look at houses and places I remember visiting, and just can't believe how everything is destroyed. I tell you, the city looked so realistic. It was mind blowing.
We found a car crashed to the side of the road. Neil drove it. I sat in the back, and Mona sat in the front passenger seat. We drove around carefully. We had no ammo, no supplies, and it was getting dark. Really we needed a place to sleep.
Every so often we would pass a zombie on the road. I always avoided looking. Sometimes it would run to the car and attack it, but we would always drive away.
Soon we made it to a house. I went inside. It looked cosy enough, but was too exposed. By this time I had lost hope. I was preparing my suicide.
"You know what guys, I'm gonna end it all," I said.
"I won't come with you. I'm gonna stay here and kill myself."
Neil and Mona looked at each other in shock. Neil was quick to speak.
"If thats what you want man."
They both drove away. The garage door was still open which made me uncomfortable. The sun was going down now. I stood on a washing machine and jumped off it, trying to land head first onto the concrete. I distinctly remember thinking "its a dream, it won't hurt" but for some reason I didn't become lucid.
After many failed death attempts my friends came back. First Neil tried helping me kill myself by running me over, but then after seeing a zombie nearby I got into the car and we drove off.
We stopped close to my old street. There was another commercial passenger plane in the sky, but it seemed to be flying fine. I wondered if they were trying to stay in the air for as long as possible. Good luck with that.
I hated stopping. I'd always feel edgy. There were so many zombies hiding, I simply couldn't let my guard down. I got into the car and started driving it. I was having trouble controlling it, and due to a mixture of bad turns and hitting the horn a few times, I attracted zombies. Mona took the wheel and we sped off to the location of my old house, which was now a small apartment building.
Mona and Neil had now disappeared, and instead it was my father, my mother, my two young sisters, and me. We were allowed the top floor of the building (it was only a 2 story building). All we had to hide us was some thick blankets blocking the staircase. Its the best alternative we could find to a door. We hoped that the zombies wouldn't notice us hiding behind it.
I remember just sitting in there, taking it all in. At one point I broke down in tears. Life was ruined for everyone.
I watched my sisters in their beds asleep. It was going to be hard to protect them.
Later at night some rough looking guy with tattoos all up his arm and his slut of a girlfriend showed up at the door with some pillows, wanting to get in.
"Are you gonna keep lights off and not walk around much? We don't want to bring attention to our location," my father said. There was an argument then they left.
As the days went by my mother grew depressed. One morning I remember my father had managed to find a tape of an episode of one of her favorite shows and play it on a TV we had found. We also managed to find some bacon, eggs, and vegetables and made her a nice breakfast. My sisters made her little cards with some paper and bark they had found. It helped my mother a lot. There was something so god damn pitiful about this particular part of the dream that it upsets me.
We seemed to cope after that. We hid in our little house, finding and eating what we could. I woke up soon after that.

So why is this the best zombie dream I've ever had? It had a long intricate plot line, the DCs all made sense, it was amazingly realistic, and it was emotional. There were lots of fine details in this dream. And also I woke up about 3 times last night, but when I went back to sleep I'd continue the zombie dream from where I stopped. I guess you don't need violence for a cool zombie dream.

I had an extremely vivid zombie dream a long time ago. I've thought about novelizing it many times, by far one of the best dreams I've ever had.

Now that I think about it, I wonder if it has anything to do with the book I was reading at the time...

Have you posted that dream? It'd be cool to read it.
