      Unhappy

      Hi everyone,

One type of dream I have quite often is one where I am late for school. Sometimes it's caused by me just doing so much that eventually I'm rushing to get to school, others I'm constantly struggling to get ready in time but just can't. I never actually get to school in those dreams, they always end with me on the way to school (or at least the ones I remember awakening from, i awaken from them on the way to school).

I stress throughout these dreams, panic and worry about how i'll get to school in time. They're not pleasant dreams at all...

What would these kind of dreams mean? Do they have any type of meaning that I should be aware of? Is there anything I really should know?

      Thanks!

I don't actually give up though in these dreams, I always panic throughout them and struggle to get ready in time. I'm never lucid in these dreams, though maybe being lucid would stop these dreams from bothering me...

Does anyone have any idea what they might represent/signify?

I didn't give up at first it was not a lucid dream i was suppose to get to school at 8:30 so it took me hours looking around for people to drive me to school although if i walked it would have taken half and hour

That sounds like my dreams, only i'm able to walk to school so I end up rushing there all the time, running, walking...etc. Getting a lift sometimes too...

I'd like to go out on a limb and say perhaps that you feel you're running late for something in your life, like you're stuck behind your friends or other people, you see them dating or getting higher paying jobs or getting married, it would help if you said how old you are. Maybe you're worried about how other people view you, like you're preoccupied with the self image of being conscientious and wanting to please your teachers or something like that. The emotion of running late could mean a lot of things, but my first guess would be that you feel like you're missing the boat on something.

I run late a lot in dreams, too.
When I was in vet school, I would dream about missing exams.
Now I just dream about being late to work.

I'm not sure running late has an absolute meaning that is the same for everyone, but for me I think it's because I'm always on time (or early), so one of my fears is being late to something important - which is probably why I dream about it. I usually only happens when I have something important to do that day, so I probably dwell on the possibility of being late.

I'm 17, still in high school. Missing the boat on something does make sense, but i don't feel like i'm 'missing the boat' on anything to do with school?

I had a dream yesturday where my whole class decided to stay back in the classroom with the next class, we then were told that we had missed our big exam. It wasn't running late, but it's similar to what you said about missing exams.

My running late dreams don't always happen when I have something important to do that day. I am always running on time/early, so one of my fears might be running late. It's a possibility...

Thanks for both of your responses, does knowing i'm 17 help with anything John?

I don't typically run late. At times I never can get to where I am going.

      Dear Invadergarf

I'm surprised nobody got this right yet, but you are having a classic anxiety dream, perhaps the most common kind of anxiety dream, next to the one of being publically naked.

This Anxiety Dream varies only slightly. In your case, you are running late for class, but often people dream of realizing they are about to take their Finals and have not studied, or attended any lectures. Or they find themselves at the end of a semester and it occurs to them that they don't even remember what classes they had registered for.

I can guess that the purpose of such Dreams is to prompt us to better prepare for our lives, to be better organized, and to plan things out.

Studies would indicate that such Anxiety Dreams do indeed work for the best, as those people who have the most Anxiety Dreams actually, in their real lives, have the least to be anxious about -- that the people who typically dream of being late, are those most likely to be always on time. The Anxiety keeps them on the straight and the narrow. It is the people who have no anxiety dreams that have no internal promptings NOT to be late, and so they are the inept failures who do indeed show up late and flunk out.

As an interesting aside, back in my old college days, I was late for classes only three times... over sleeping, and in each of these instances, class had been cancelled. Something in me realized that I did not need to wake up and allowed me to get those extra hours of sleep.

I'm really prepared though in my life, never late (almost was once, freaked out).

I'm really anxious about being late I think, but lately i haven't been (haven't had these dreams for a while). Maybe these dreams do give me a prompting not to be late, but I don't think I ever would be late, i'm too careful. So your idea of those having dreams of running late being the most likely to be always on time must be true!

Yeah, that's similar to mine that I have only most of the time it's all of school i'm about to miss, rather than just one assignment i've missed. Though the dream where I didn't go to my exam was similar too. Maybe they're all connected? Maybe late dreams and dreams where we forget assignments all mean something similar?
