Saving girl, whilst getting hurt - what?

      Hey guys,

A few weeks back (probably more like 5-6 weeks now actually) I had a dream (maybe a nightmare, but I think the way it ended changed it to a dream) that I remembered really well, which is unusual for me.

I usually only remember the odd dream here and there (maybe 1 a month) and not in very good detail, usually remembering only a few moments or key points from the dream. This is one of the reasons I want to see what others think of the dream itself.

      The dream:

From the point I remember, I had come to a castle style mansion with a girl. There were several other people (I don't know any of them in real life) in the mansion, and things are fairly normal for a short period of time. In this period the girl complains that I don't spend enough time with her, or listen to her enough.

After this period things get weird, and we find out that the place is owned by some sort of wizard who can control the house and plans to keep us prisoners within it's walls.

Throughout the dream though, the girl I am with keeps doing things that we've been told not to do, and going places we've been told not to. Everytime she does this I follow, and when the 'wizard' finds out and starts controlling things I do whatever and save her and end up coping all the pain for it. (he could make things shock you with electricity for example). This is how the dream went for the majority - the girl ignoring my warnings, me saving her and coping the pain/trouble for it.

Eventually she convinces me of a plan to escape and we work together and get out, and walk of hand in hand happy - until I woke up.

      The reality:

The girl is someone I know, whom I happen to like, but things didn't work out with her.

So I'm assuming all this just means my subconscious is torturing me over my efforts to be with that girl, but then why the happy ending? So I figured I'd ask here to see what others think.

You're probably kind of right. I'd also ask whether the dream was really about her or about some kind of idealised version of her in your own mind - constructed from unconscious fantasy.

The wizard part seems to represent adult power - he comes across as a kind of father figure. You're a prisoner, so you don't believe you can get away from "his" power.

I would also wonder if there is something oedipal about the dream. You've got away from the wizard and married the woman of your dreams. (In Oedipus he kills his father and marries his mother although he didn't know it was her).
