This was REALLY long, several days in dream-time:
This one was kind of disjointed, I get the feeling I forgot about the first half hour of it. At the point I first remember, I was evacuating with my family from our home in the deep forest of some new planet. We all lived in the trees on enormous platforms, but some sort of creatures living down on the surface of the planet had been climbing up into the villages, so we were all leaving the area to start a new colony somewhere safer. There were five monorail platforms in the area, so all of my family got tickets for the next trip out of the area, but since the monorails were so crowded from the evacuation, we were all split up into different trains, my mom and sister in one, and my two brothers, my dad, two of our neighbors and I in the other. So we all got into the monorail, and since the trip was expected to take a few days, we also had beds booked. Unfortunately, my father, younger brother, and the neighbors were all in the first car, while me and my older brother were in the 27th car, which was the back of the train. My dad and the rest of them set up their stuff in the first car, while I followed my brother to the back of the train. When we got there, I set up my stuff and took a restroom break, then began to walk back up to the front of the train. I was about halfway there when the train stopped. The power went out shortly afterwards, so I wandered the nearest bench and sat down next to two girls and a guy who'd already been sitting there. The intercom came on and told us not to worry and such, but everybody, including the people next to me, where panicking anyway.
Now, I guess I should explain the creatures on the surface in depth, since the train had at this point been completely brought to a halt down there. When somebody died, it was the ritual on the planet to toss their bodies off the sides of the platforms, to let them fall to the ground far below. However, the person's soul, though seperate from their body, would wander around on the ground, searching for their body. More greedy souls, or souls no longer sane because of their prolonged time out of a body, often attempted to steal other's bodies, entering them and re-animating them. The reanimation process was very draining, however, so much of their conscious mind was destroyed, leaving them far below the intelligence of even the lowest of animals. According to the planet's folklore, once they were in this state, they became easily corrupted by the devil, and grew an urge to maim, kill, or leave their body for one in better condition, forcing a living person's soul out of their body and taking it's place. I don't know the exact name from the dream, but it was some variant on the term 'Ronin', so I will mention them as such from now on.
These weren't the only things to be feared on the surface, though. The souls of the dead, deprived of bodies or unable to possess one, sometimes forced themselves to join together with other souls until they became powerful enough to affect the physical world without the need of a body. Having that many souls present in a small area makes them almost impossible to predict, since they often are trying to carry out the goals of 50 some odd spirits at once. Because of this, they often merely wander around, and rarely ever show the presence of mind to attempt to help or hurt another being. This meant that they were not truly hostile, nor helpful, but simply lost. However, being lost didn't make them incapable of harming people, they simply lacked the presence of mind to consciously work for or against the common good. As mentioned earlier, they were creations of pure spirit, so dense they could actually affect the physical world without need of a body. Being so concentrated caused the souls to actually vibrate the surrounding matter, heating it to temperatures high enough to burn anything near it. Another side effect of their rather cramped proximity to eachother is a definite effect on nearby creatures (sentient and not)--they simply cannot think, nor function. The souls, being connected as they are, can no longer operate alone, but that doesn't stop them from trying. Whenever such a soul-monster comes near a creature or person, many of it's compromising souls may try to reach out and possess the body of said creature/person, but being connected to the other souls, cannot actually enter said body. When they attempt to possess the body, they do force the souls inhabiting it partially out, depriving them of control of their body.
Some of said soul-creatures do eventually sort out their priorities, and after many years of living with the other souls, can actually learn to work together with eachother, and develop, once again, a conscious mind. These can be benevolent or destructive, just as a person can be. They are, however, very rare, though they tend to group together with other conscious soul-beings the way people group together in villages and cities, so if you find one, you will probably find more.
Now, back to the story: The train is stopped, and we're on the surface. The Ronins can feel the presence of many souls, and assume that this means that more bodies are nearby, so they immediately begin to close in on the train. I'm sitting on a bench, looking out through the windows at the darkened surrounding woods and trying, to no avail, to comfort one of the girls next to me, who's completely broken down under the stress of the situation. Occasionally, through the windows I see a glimpse of something orange and white drifting through the trees, presumably soul-creatures. Before long, the Ronins find the train, and about twelve close in on the car I'm sitting in, bashing the doors and windows, trying to find a way in. Luckily, the doors automatically locked when the train's power died, a precaution invented because of the Ronins. The windows were made of plexiglass as well, an added safety feature/vandalism reducer. However, before long, the Ronins seemed to be finding a way to pry open the windows from the outside, and despite the efforts of the passengers and me, we couldn't close the windows as fast as they could open them, and soon they'd be inside.
Before long, I began to panic, and, no longer able to help the small group of level-headed people closing the windows, I went back to my seat and once again tried to comfort the girl. Through the windows I watch the progress of the Ronins, who seemed to, for the moment, be fighting amongst themselves. Before I knew what was happening, I suddenly stopped thinking entirely and my attention was completely focused out the window as my soul was half-way forced out of my body. Fiery, bright white soul-creatures burst out of the forest around us and rapidly closed in on the Ronins, who were also paralyzed as their soul's grip on the corpses they'd stolen was forcibly weakened by the soul-creatures. The soul creatures seemed to be pulling the Ronins off the train's sides and roof, and soon they dragged them back off a ways from the train. The Ronins, though their skin was charring and blackening under the grip of the soul-creatures, couldn't do anything to fight them off, seeing as how they no longer had any power over their bodies. The soul creatures stopped about thirty feet away from the train, and once again the passengers again had control of their bodies. The girl next to me now seemed to be in a state of shock, now far beyond crying and panic. I hugged her and told her everything would be okay, and she seemed to just collapse. Before long she was asleep with her head in my lap. I resumed watching out the window.
The soul-creatures seemed to be merely standing, waiting for something, and before long I saw what it was. A short figure in what appeared to be a dark brown trenchcoat was hunched over and hobbling towards our train car with a battered and dirty flashlight held in one hand. He fumbled for a minute with the door, but without overly much difficulty, managed to override the lock and pulled it open, stumbling inside. Now that I could see him properly, I immediately noticed it wasn't human. It was about four feet tall, but he was hunched over so much that it's difficult to say exactly how tall it'd be if it just stood up. It had blue skin, similar in texture and thickness to an elephant's. It had two large eyes, set slightly crooked on its face, with one higher than the other. A tiny nose and mouth seemed crammed into the bottom inch of it's face, and a hood covered it's hair, which stuck out from under it's hood, grimy and wet. He proceeded down the aisle between the benches to the nearest one with anybody sitting in it, which happened to be mine. He squinted at the boy and girl on the opposite site of the bench, shining his grimy flashlight in each of their faces and shaking his head as he looked at each one. The flashlight beam then trailed down to the girl's face, asleep on my lap, and he shook his head once more, but as the beam hit my face his features lit up and he nodded and mumbled something incoherent, but excitement seemed evident in his voice. He hobbled forward and grabbed my arm with his free hand, stuffing the hand with the flashlight into a pocket on his coat, which emerged after a few seconds of fumbling holding something small clasped in his palm. He forced a small trinket with a spherical, blue crystal seemingly glowing on the inside into my hand, and promptly turned around and hobbled back out of the train. As I watched out the window, he walked up to the soul-creatures, seemingly unphased by them, and began to talk to the largest of them, who merely nodded, then turned around and walked off, followed by the rest of the soul-creatures (still dragging the stunned Ronins, whose bodies now threatened to fall apart as the soul-creatures hands burned through their skin and into their arms and legs). The blue creature turned and nodded at me, then followed the soul-creatures into the forest, leaving the train, once again, in darkness.
I pocketed the trinket he gave me, and continued to gaze out the window, though nothing reappeared through the trees. The passengers around me began to mutter and talk amongst themselves, though none, including the people next to me, had noticed that they blue creature had given me anything. I sat staring off into space for a long time, but eventually drifted off to sleep, sitting up with the girl's head still in my lap. I awoke the next morning before anybody else on my bench. Most of the rest of the car were still asleep as well, though a few had awoken and were silently looking out the windows or around the car. I considered getting up and trying to open the doors between cars to go back to my seat in the 27th car, but the girl's head was still in my lap, and I didn't want to wake her up, or, upon reflection, did I want to just leave--after all, she WAS cute, and I might not see her again if I left the rail car. Instead, I settled for looking around the car. I noticed that the emergency lights in the aisle were on now, though the train still didn't seem to be moving. They didn't seem to do much to the surrounding darkness, however--the railcar was still incredibly dark, though my eyes were now fully adjusted to the darkness.
After a few hours, everybody else in the car awoke as well, including the girl next to me, who, rather than talking, just leaned her head on my shoulder and sat in silence. Eventually, a man stood up and announced that he was going to go find out what the holdup was, and promptly walked up to the door leading to the next railcar and began to jimmy the lock. Another person stood up and helped him to open the lock, then another got up and joined them, and the three walked off into the next car. The door shut automatically behind them. The rest of the car just sat, mostly in silence, though occasionally a whisper would be exchanged, for a few hours, until the three men returned with another person, a tall man in a blue uniform with short, dark hair. He walked over to the nearest bench and stood on it, then turned on a flashlight and focused it on himself so everybody could see him, and announced that the train wouldn't be moving for at least a day or two, but food was available a few cars away from here, and it didn't appear that we were in any more danger from the Ronins. He then began to walk down the aisle to the door opposite the one he emerged from, still followed by the three men, and opened it with a key card from his pocket, then entered. We could hear a similar speech through the door to the next car, but after that, it was quiet. Eventually people started to get up and wander around, muttering conversations to eachother as though they were afraid to break the silence. After an hour or so, I told the girl next to me that I was going to go back to find my brother in the cars behind us, and she asked to come along. I stood up and walked to the door the man had dissapeared through an hour or so earlier, and began to make my way back to the 27th car, the girl following me and grasping my hand as though it was her life line.
Before I could make it to the 27th car, the dream ended, but I'm hoping I'll be able to continue it in another dream...
If not, I'm also considering turning it into a short story, and if I do I'll post it in Artist's Corner here on DV.
