I found that keeping a dream journal really helping me recall my dreams. Like my mind was subconsciously remembering them so I could write them down after I wake up. Also, my dream journal helps me remember details as I'm writing - I always write in the present tense (like I'm reliving the dream as I write it), and as I write, I remember details of what happened next.
That should be your first step - start a dream journal. And if you don't really remember you dreams enough to write them down, just jot down a few words (flashes of anything you remember). It's a start in the right direction. I also recommend writing down the key words just after waking - the longer to stay awake, the more details fade.
