The timing of this maneuver may be critical. *You see, coffee, if taken much too soon before sleep might act to make one restless and agitated and therefore unfit to fall asleep. *But if taken immediately before sleep, may 'kick in' after one is already asleep while adding enough stimulation to encourage Dream Recall. *But then, it may take the devil to pay to ever fall asleep again that night. *
One must keep in mind that the First Duty of Sleep is to give the body its much needed rest. * Everything else is gravy. *
The choice that is suggested here reminds me of my days at the Yoga Ashram. *A friend of mine there had read that Fasting, that is, not eating food for days on end, would promote spiritual Vision and Enlightenment. *This was all fine and well until he became too weak to work in the Garden and the Kitchen and I suddenly ended up having to do everything. * Then I was the one who had the Big Spiritual Vision and my friend was so disconsolate and asked me what I had done to deserve it. *Well, I told him "Physical Exhaustion promotes Spiritual Visions". *Yes, I was funny even back then.
I agree with you on that. It is the timing that counts, as caffeine actaully takes 3 hours to kick in, so if you have coffee right before sleep, it would wake you up later with excellent recall, as it probably wakes you up during the dream, as it is very difficult to wake up when you aren't in REM sleep (i have slept with an alarm playing the simpsons theme loudly over and over for 20 minutes, until I entered REM sleep, where it woke me up).
P.S. I have no idea what the Yoga Ashram is, but I love that anecdote.
