I've read everywhere that a dream journal is essential however, here is my question;

      I seem to naturally remember my dreams in a fair amount of detail, but then when I decided to start keeping a journal. They stopped. I could only remember fragments of dreams I've had. So is it still a neccesity or should I stop?

      Thanks

      One of the purposes to having a dream journal is it lets you come back a week or even a few months later and begin to look for patterns to your dreams. (dream signs)

      It is pretty important to begin recognizing these as they are used to recognize that it is a dream.

      Give it a few more weeks and see if your dream recall returns to normal.

      you must be the change you wish to see in the world...

      I have a good dream recall with out using a DJ, but as Seeker said it can help you notice your dream signs.

      I did start a dream journal a few months ago. Before then I hardly ever rememberd my dreams. However in a month or so my dream recall go pretty decent. I think partially I owe that to my DJ.

      However, then I stopped recording my dreams (to lazy). However for the last few months I stopped my dream recall still is better then it used to be.

      My conclusion is: It's not essential, but I think it's usefull, and maybe allso just good to do for some time so you get used to recalling dreams.

      But if you don't keep a DJ how will you remember your dreams in years to come?
