Yes, mantras.

I don't use it myself but I've tried it, and it worked. A mantra is... well I don't know completly, but it's something you say, like a "spell" to activate the right thoughts. We use one for recall in a online-course on dreams I'm doing right now.

It goes like this: "raaaoooom gaaaauuum".

you pronounce it (in your mind only), when you wake upp (lying as still as possible ofcourse)

pronounce it multiple times until you get a picture from a dream, then focus on that picture, and ask questions like: why did that that happen? why was he or she there... etc

I know the mantra sound silly, but I think it's a good way to get the mind to be focused.

B6 helps me recall, it makes my dreams much longer and vivid. I find right when I wake up, that if I don't move, then I look at the clock, then move to the exact position I was in, then concentrate, but not to much i can recall quite a bit more than if i just get up.
I am a man. I have nothing to show off. I am just a person withnothingexcept for what I would like to show off, which is nothing.

I have another idea, one that's helped me.

Have ONE glass of red wine about 20 minutes before bed. Or, if you're smaller than me, maybe half a glass. The alcohol should kill your REM cycles for the first few hours of sleep, and then in the LATER sleep cycles towards the end of your sleep, you'll get an effect called "REM rebound". Basically, your REM cycles will be longer and maybe more intense than usual, making it so you get more dreams and more vivid dreams, and therefore may be able to recall them easier.

I find it incredibly difficult to just focus on something in my mind. Last night, my first ever night in my quest for LD's, so I drank half a glass of water, lay down, relaxed my body, imagined a vacuum cleaner sucking the thoughts out of my head, and then lay there, eyes closed, in my mind saying "I am going to go to sleep, wake up, drain the glass of water, remember my dream and write it down" over and over. But I kept getting the words mixed up, like I'd be saying "I'm going to go to sleep, wake up, remember my dreams, drain the glass, write them down" etc. and often would find myself going off the thought and thinking that I needed to turn on my side, or thinking I could feel my girlfriend moving etc.

The mantra sounds like a better plan, coz it's shorter and easier to remember. Anyway, question - how do I keep focus on only my thoughts, and ignore my body, till I fall asleep?

Also, when I wake up, should I just focus on saying the mantra in my head till the images come?
This morning I woke up with feelings about the dream, but not actual memories, like the dream was just out of my reach.

What I do when I go to bed is I lay flat on my back (which is comfortable to me) and as I relax my body, I repeat in my mind simply "remember my dreams". On nights when I do this, the next morning, I at least have vague memories (like the other night all I remembered was something about nature pictures) but sometimes, I do remember the dream in detail, like last night.

Just saying "remember my dreams" in my mind is a lot more simple than 'go to sleep, remember dreams, wake up, write them down..." and for me, it does work. I am still working on the writing it down thing. I have a palm pilot next to my bed that I can type them into. If I didn't wake up so tired, I could anyway.

All is not what it seems in your dreams.

Yeah that makes far more sense. I was reading a bit further and came across several theories that it's not so much what you say, but more the thoughts or feelings associated. So I just tried thinking about remembering, or having the intention of remembering, and I had much better recall the last 2 days.
It's now just writing them down thats the problem, I keep telling myself "Ill write it down after I wake up" then go back to sleep and wake up, and... gone!

Do you think it matters how i lie?I share a bed with my girlfriend most nights, and naturally she expects me to cuddle and hold her tight and keep her warm when we sleep. The last week I've made a point of lying on my back, not touching her, to get myself to remember the dreams, and it worked okish, but I doubt she'll accept that for too long!
