Lightbulb Online Dream Based MMORPG. Your thoughts

      DREAM BASED MMORPG

I'm thinking of counstructing a Dream Based MMORPG, this is not definite, but I could do it, it would take ages, but if enough people are interested i'd be happy to put my time into it.

I thought about the game being set on earth, but in the times of swords and magic and so on... I think it would be a cool idea to have players to be able to play the game on earth at day time, but have no spells. And when it comes to night time, players can go to sleep, their skills would greatly increase in the dream world, and they would be able to cast spells. If i do begin this project, I will daily upload screenshots and stuff. I'm thinking of making this a dreamviews only game, atleast for a while. Also, I will need four or five people to trial this game eventually, if your interested just say below

Please comment below if you have any ideas, or if your just interested, your input means alot!

That sounds cool! But why would you put in a day-time world? There wouldn't be too much point in that...

Oh, have you read WakingNomad's post "Secrets of the Dream Plane"? Maybe you can add some elements of that in there as well!

I'd also be glad to trial this game! It sounds really interesting!

Cool thanks for the input, I don't like the idea of a daytime world either, but being just in a dream world would make the game boring and easy, we need to think of an alternative.

Maybe the daytime world would be able to be used for a warzone for people that are arguing in their dreams...? Sorta like people are having arguments in their dream (for example, border issues with territories), then they go into war in the daytime world. Possibly their dream skills pass on into there to a certain degree...? Just an idea.

Yeah that sounds awesome, people can control countries, and make their own. Selling land to each other and stuff, nice idea! You can be a moderator .

But we can't go too far, gotta still be based on the dream world.

Yeah, I know. Just trying to think of a way to make the daytime world have a real purpose. I don't think people would just want to hang around for a few hours until nighttime comes. If you do end up making that game, it would probably be a good idea to make the daytime no more than an hour long (based on the assumption that you would have the daytime and nighttime alternate through certain time periods).

yeah, i'd do three hour shifts (or something like that), what about every three hours a portal opens, to the other realm (Earth/Dream) for half an hour, and if you miss it, your stuck for another three hours. Or would people get annoyed?

If you do that people would probably be annoyed and would have the choice to stay in one part of the day forever if they really wanted to. If people don't like the dream part of the game then they will probably stay in the daytime for as long as they can, ruining the point of the game. To prevent this you should put a time limit for both daytime and nighttime. Of course a shorter one for daytime so that they still participate in what the game was meant for longer than what it wasn't meant for (stay in nighttime longer than daytime in case you didn't get what I meant).

Yeah but I'm mainly basing it on the dream world.

Yeah, hmmm, maybe we have a portal (which is always open) to both realms, players choose. SIMPLE. But we make it so magic and impossible things can only be done in dream world, and buying and selling is only for the real world.

There is still the possibility of players staying in one place forever. Maybe a timer only on the daytime...? Oh, here is a way that can keep people from staying in the daytime for too long. If they stay in there for way too long, then their levels start to drop because of sleep deprivation. yeah... that's a good idea.

      Yeah nice idea.

      Ive started making it!

At the moment the controls are like this:

Arrow Keys - Depending on which one you hit is the way your character moves.
Enter - Used to pick up items on the map or to chat.
Shift - Holding down shift and using the arrow keys makes you run.
Ctrl - Using this key will let you attack.
Insert - When you double click on a spell it will memorize it, you use Insert to cast it when you select an enemy!
F1 - Brings up the Admin Panel with many commands on it.
F4 - This will open the Guild Create form.
F5 - Brings up the Guild Panel, this is where you can add players to you guild.
F11 - This will take a screenshot of the game client.
F12 - This will take a screenshot of the game screen only!
Home - This will turn your character in place! (clockwise)

      Are they ok?

Make it so that as you gain experience, your Dream Control goes up (ie you can do progressively more stuff, sort of like a slowly expanding ability set).

That way you can set it in the dream world without everyone being overpowered.

Make it like all of the players are all lucid dreamers, sharing a dream in the dream world.

You could have quests, for example, a quest to find your player's dream guide or something.

Read WakingNomad's Dream Plane thread... you don't have to believe the histories and conspiracies and all that, but it should give you inspiration.

Please please make this, it'll be awesome. Although my schedule is a bit sporadic due to school (I start tomorrow), I'd be happy to beta various stages of development for you and provide feedback on glitches and improvements/alterations.

And the controls sound fine for now, you can add more and swap controls around as development continues and you get beta feedback.

No. Why would you use insert? It's way out of the way and inconvenient. Also it's more or less standard these days to have running to be the default speed and you hold shift to walk. Unless there is some disadvantage to running all the time, that's generally what people will want to do. Also why do you need a rotate clockwise button and why is it bound to home?

He's using arrow (casual) keys to move. It also implies that you could reach up with the right hand to hit the Home and Insert keys.

Ok, I will eventually upload some screenshots. On the In-Game menu there is something to click on instead of having to press all these keys, its just easier to use the keys.

I mean, when ive finished the first couple of quests

You wake up, the sun is strong in the sky, but not hot. You are in a field where the grass laps at your shins, and a huge tree is in the distance, with what seems to be statues surrounding it.
the ground feels moist and comfortable, but not wet, almost perfect. You feel a dull ache in your neck, nonstop. After taking in your surroundings, you notice a huge brown tent. You step inside... Took a while to put everyones ideas into this intro!

My idea is to put a lot of different LD techniques into the gameplay. I mean, it would be cool to learn some new stuff about dreaming while playing (educational aspect). It could be done by engaging gamers' alertness, encouraging reality tests and so on. Hmmm.. another thought. This game could be expanded, it could be present in our everyday life by simple tasks that NPC or whoever would ask gamers to accomplish, i.e. "Next time you see a clock, look at it, close your eyes and open them, check if hour didn't change". It would be your daytime part of the game.

It would be easier to use the keys if you assigned the actions in a way that made sense. As it is now your hands will be jumping all over the keyboard. Why not use a group of keys that are close together? Something like X for attack, Z for spell, C for use/pickup. That'd be 9999 times easier to use.

Anyway, there should be an option of configuring your keys, personalized binds. That's a standard.
