Thread: USB X-Box Controller

Yippee! After two days of messing around with a spliced USB cable and X-Box cord, I've managed to get a working S-Controller to use as a joystick for my computer. It should've been easier than it wound up being; the USB cable's wires were all the wrong colors so I had to test them to be sure which was which. After that, I just attached all the wires to each other and downloaded a driver online, and now I can play Star Wars: X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter with it's double-joystick, POV-hat, 12-buttony goodness.

Pretty easy to make one.
Google it and you'll find lots of results, but I can more or less describe how right here.

Take an old USB cable, like one from a digital camera that you don't need anymore. Buy a USB cable if you have to, they're really cheap. Cut it in half, strip the outer coating back. There should be four wires inside: Red, White, Green and Black. Take the X-Box controller cable's end. (The detachable dongle-part). Cut it off right at the tip, immediately after the plug ends.

Cut it so it looks like that. I know it's not an amazingly technical drawing, you can find another online if you don't understand.

Strip the coating back a bit, and you'll see more colored wires inside; Red, White, Green and Black again, but also Yellow. Ignore the yellow cable, you don't need it. Splice the red to red, white to white, green to green and black to black. Cover the spliced ends so the don't cross eachother, then make it secure enough not to fall apart. Electrical tape or something. Download XBCD, install it, then plug in the X-Box controller.

Just strip the colored wires back a bit (not too much, or it might short out). The wires are thin enough to do it with your fingernails rather than a wire stripper. Then just twist the wire together with the wire of matching color so the metal contacts are touching as much as possible, then electrical tape them there or soder them in place if you're really ambitious.

Not a clue. I'm not big on Halo 2 (I liked Halo one better, though it's hard to put my finger on exactly why), and I don't have X-Box Live, since I'm too lazy to set it up.
