      Emo

I'd like to see where this goes. List emo related bands, what you think emo is, where it started etc...

      Rites of Spring

I've listened to them a lot. At first they put forth hardcore punk style of music, but later became "personal" in their music as they shifted away from the punk scene. Rites of Spring being the first to develop a sound such as "emo" made emo a subgenre of hardcore punk.

Emo really does have a lengthy history, and I don't know it all. Today however, it remains controversial with bands beginning to run away from the label emo.

Bands such as these have been labeled emo, correct or not: AFI, Aiden, Atreyu, Brand New, Blood Brothers, Fall Out Boy, Fear Before the March of Flames Finch, From Autumn to Ashes, From First to Last, Funeral for a Friend, Hawthorne Heights, H.I.M., MCR, SIlverstein, The Starting Line, The Promise Ring, The Used, Underoath

I've heard lots of definitions of 'emo', and my take of it is that they think they're the center of the universe in a subtle way, and they want everyone to feel sympathetic for them because they're so 'brilliant' and 'tortured'.

I would argue that Saves The Day was the first commercially successful emo band. But Dashboard Confessional definitiely kicked it all off. 'Again I Go Unnoticed' was pretty big in its time.

the term "emo" came from "emotional hardcore" in the late 80s and early 90s...it was melodic hardcore punkrock. this was while mtv actually played music videos (and beavis and butthead). but the 12-15 year old girl market is too large to be ignored, and little girls like pseudo-tough guys singing songs about falling in love and how they are such losers. if you think the advent of 'emo' or any other shitty recent fad is anything but a good source of money, you are living a lie (a really dorky lie).

      nicely put!

damn I think I have to mow the lawn today...I wish my lawn was more emo, cause then it would cut itself.

emo is just another clique, another label, another way to conform. except more 12 year olds at their concerts.

What I'm trying to figure out is why people so easily jump on the bandwagon with new trends. All these new bands that trend-hopping teens follow have no inkling of originality, no aesthetic value. Music now is often made to be radio-friendly with a high emphasis on "image" so that they will sell as many albums as possible to make as much money as possible and no regard to the music itself is ever made.

It's a mockery to what music is about.

I'd say My Chemical Romance would be up there fairly high on the list. I man just the name of the band is amazingly emo and unique. I once read a quote something along the lines of "The punks never never realised what the hippies did... that in a perfectly capitalist society, rebellion is just another thing to be marketed." I'd say this applies to the emo's too.

I was sitting having a coffee the other day when a whole pack of them walked past... I have never wanted to punch so many kids in my life.

i was under the impression that emo was short for emotional... now find me a band/musician that has no emotion and i'll give you a reason to call that crap its own genre.

p.s. i beat emo kids up and steal their lunch money. it rocks.

They generally travel in packs for protection and to remind themselves that there are other people that follow the same trend so that their otherwise empty lives have meaning.

I personally think of Emos as depressed people wearing all black who hang their head really low and cut their wists. I know an emo kid. I don't think he cuts his wrists or anything, and he's actually pretty nice, but he still kind of scares me by being emo.

I find actual 'emo' people quite interesting to talk to.

"Trendy" emos, are a complete different story though.

LMAO... i get the same urges sometimes. I thought I was the only one.

I know kids who were goth but are now sampling emo. Just flinging themselves into the latest trends. And it sickens me. Especiallly when I see one with little scars zigzagging all up and down their wrists. I want so badly to kick them in the face repeatedly then say... "There... now you've got something to bitch and moan about."

Here you go. How to be emo. It's a hillarious video done in the style of an old educational school video. It's long, about twenty minutes, but it's funny and true.

I love that Homer quote, Penguin

Wow that's an even better quote. Though this is totally off topic, and PM would probably have been a better way of communicating this thought. Thanks anyways.

You know, I was going to say that The Simpsons is always relevant, but I can’t think of a single Emo reference from that show. I like that South Park making fun of Emo Goths.

I could tolerate it when people were just listening to the music no matter how bland and repetitive I thought it was. But when all the former punks who at that time were former skaters went emo and started writing poems and turning vegetarian it got ridiculous. I don't understand why music has to change your image. I listen to everything from Coldplay to Pantera and I think that's what music is there for, not just to pick one genre and live religiously by it but to listen to everything.

The all time worst though is when you refer to something as hardcore or emo and the person you're talking to goes:

"Sigh..that's not hardcore, hardcore is completely different, thats post grind core, notice the screams and the guitar riffs are way different in this song.

It's all the same and takes no effort at all to write, you don't even have to come up with lyrics. When me and my band were playing a show we wrote a hardcore song in 5 minutes, and the singer started screaming random things like I like cheese and no one could tell the difference.

      That is hilarious.

LOL, you're right though. Simpsons are always relevant. Seriously, I can't believe I called it off topic. If you ask me, so is South Park (waht a great show). I love South Park, and it's at a more convenient time than the simpsons, as I am always eating dinner or busy while the simpsons are on. You know what would be really great though; Carlos Mencia making fun of emos and goths. Now that would be fun.
