I've heard lots of definitions of 'emo', and my take of it is that they think they're the center of the universe in a subtle way, and they want everyone to feel sympathetic for them because they're so 'brilliant' and 'tortured'. |

I'd like to see where this goes. List emo related bands, what you think emo is, where it started etc... |

I would argue that Saves The Day was the first commercially successful emo band. But Dashboard Confessional definitiely kicked it all off. 'Again I Go Unnoticed' was pretty big in its time. |
|
the term "emo" came from "emotional hardcore" in the late 80s and early 90s...it was melodic hardcore punkrock. this was while mtv actually played music videos (and beavis and butthead). but the 12-15 year old girl market is too large to be ignored, and little girls like pseudo-tough guys singing songs about falling in love and how they are such losers. if you think the advent of 'emo' or any other shitty recent fad is anything but a good source of money, you are living a lie (a really dorky lie). |

nicely put! |

What I'm trying to figure out is why people so easily jump on the bandwagon with new trends. All these new bands that trend-hopping teens follow have no inkling of originality, no aesthetic value. Music now is often made to be radio-friendly with a high emphasis on "image" so that they will sell as many albums as possible to make as much money as possible and no regard to the music itself is ever made. |

The new Papa Johns Emo Pizza! It cuts Itself! |

I'd say My Chemical Romance would be up there fairly high on the list. I man just the name of the band is amazingly emo and unique. I once read a quote something along the lines of "The punks never never realised what the hippies did... that in a perfectly capitalist society, rebellion is just another thing to be marketed." I'd say this applies to the emo's too. |
|
i was under the impression that emo was short for emotional... now find me a band/musician that has no emotion and i'll give you a reason to call that crap its own genre. |

clear eyes. strong hands.

I personally think of Emos as depressed people wearing all black who hang their head really low and cut their wists. I know an emo kid. I don't think he cuts his wrists or anything, and he's actually pretty nice, but he still kind of scares me by being emo. |
|
I find actual 'emo' people quite interesting to talk to. |

The Emo Song! its stuck in my head! |

Here you go. How to be emo. It's a hillarious video done in the style of an old educational school video. It's long, about twenty minutes, but it's funny and true. |
|
Heh heh heh... |
|
That was hillarious. I love that video. |

I love that Homer quote, Penguin |

You know, I was going to say that The Simpsons is always relevant, but I can’t think of a single Emo reference from that show. I like that South Park making fun of Emo Goths. |
|
I could tolerate it when people were just listening to the music no matter how bland and repetitive I thought it was. But when all the former punks who at that time were former skaters went emo and started writing poems and turning vegetarian it got ridiculous. I don't understand why music has to change your image. I listen to everything from Coldplay to Pantera and I think that's what music is there for, not just to pick one genre and live religiously by it but to listen to everything. |
