OK, my long promised Ozzfest 2007 Report!!
The alarm clock rings, it is three a.m. and I have only been asleep for three hours. I stumble to the shower, then brush my teeth and take a couple of Sudafed’s in an effort to wake up. My son and his two friends are downstairs and still awake. I kiss my wife goodbye, gather up the guys and go to the car. We start then engine, pop in a CD, and start our 7 hour, 450 mile journey to Columbus Ohio!
We arrive at the Germain Amphitheater at 11am, the temperature is already about 90 degrees. As we are standing in line, I take time to observe all of the people around me. All age groups are represented from young teenagers to people slightly older than myself. Every conceivable hairstyle is represented in every conceivable color. Some women have on almost nothing, some are in full Goth attire with full makeup, I feel sorry for those, it’s WAAAY to hot to be wearing that much black. I see T-shirts representing almost all metal bands. Yep, very individualistic crowd, I wonder if any of them are lucid dreamers….
A yell goes up, people near the gate are excited, could it be? Are they going to let us in early? Nah, the staff is just messing with the crowd, that’s a good way to get killed!!!
Finally, the gates open and we walk past the security points, emptying our pockets for inspection. It’s getting hotter by the minute. We stop at the T-shirt stand and purchase a tour shirt and then it’s on to Second Stage. When we get back there, 3 Inches of Blood is already tearing up the place. Egypt Central, Nile, Ankla were to be up soon. I didn’t want to cramp the guys style so I cut them loose and told them to meet up with me in few hours.
The temperature was now over 95 and we were on asphalt. Reading the paper the next day, I found that 7 people were treated for heat related problems.
I wondered around a bit more, it was unbearable to stop. I spent my time alternating between the shops and revisiting second stage. There was a large mosh going on the whole time in front of the stage. In order to keep them from dying, they were constantly being hosed down. I stopped by one time and watch ChthoniC, although I had no idea what they were singing, I was impressed with the structure of their music. I’ll probably buy one of their CDs.
Did I say it was hot? I mean brutally hot by this time!!!
I gathered up the guys and we went to get a bite, $4 for a coke and $4 for a small snack. While I was refilling my water bottle, one of the guys got sick from lack of food and the heat. He threw up three times, of course everyone thought he was way cool for partying so hard!!
A little after three, they opened the gates to the main stage. Main stage was to begin around 6.
Lordi was the opening act, interesting stage show, interesting use of pyrotechnics. I enjoyed them. Static-X was up next, very hard driving beat and my first real introduction to scream metal. They were louder and harder than Lordi, but I enjoyed them as well.
Lamb of God came up next and all hell broke loose. Extremely loud, extreme beat. At the beginning of their second song, they shouted out: “I want you guys to fuck up this place”. Now I digress, Germain Amphitheater is an interesting place, it is an open air amphitheater with seats under a roof and festival seating on the lawn. We were in the seats and there were about 1000+ people on the lawn.
At the start of the second song, stuff started flying. Bottles, grass clods, bottles filled with dirt, shoes! The air was full of projectiles. By this point, nobody was watching the stage, we were all dodging projectiles!!!
A huge mosh formed on the lawn, it was at least 50 x 200 feet and had 200-300 participants. Total madness, you could see streams of people running toward it from all directions! If Lamb of God had performed much longer, there would have been serious injures.
9:40 now and time for Ozzy. Of course, the crowd goes wild! I’ve got to say, I like the sober Ozzy much better, he put on an awesome show. Whenever a Black Sabbath number was played, it turned into a giant sing-along.
We made it back to the hotel by 11:30 and collapsed into bed, man what a day!
Now some of my personal thoughts on the whole thing. I heard the F-word used in every possible way, saw it printed on shirts in every possible form. I saw some people totally wasted, but most sober and enjoying their individualism. One thing that impressed me was the attitude and energy of the crowd. I am not afraid of what this next generation will do. In them, I recognized the same spirit that existed in my generation in the late 60’s and early 70’s. Of course the stupid ones will remove themselves from the gene pool by overdose or accident, but the others, I expect great things from them!!!
